If he trades it in for a new or almost new truck they wont care if him and his buddies push it into the lot,it will go straight to the auction where little corner used car lot guys buy them, big dealers rarely ever keep anything older then 3-4 yrs old on the lot (at least around here they dont) since most people who go shopping at big dealers are not looking for old units.

My dad has an old 99 Cherokee that has about 3% metal left on it and leaks left, right and center and there doing the $3500 cash for clunkers promo now.
He wouldnt even get $200 for the thing on Craiglists

I'd fix it and sell it, Where i live these trucks are VERY valued. They won't stay on the lot for longer than a week. I'd do a rebuild which is under $2000, then drive it for awhile. Or sell it. I think it would be hard to sell it without a working transmission.

Well sir, i wish a rebuild is under $2000. here they are anywhere from 3000-3500 and a new tranny is $4000+

I wonder why trucks are worth so little in CA...I would think the opposite. weird. Here in the NW USA trucks hold their value for a long time!
I just bought an 04 F150 FX4 super cab with 83k miles on it for just over $12,000 and that was because I knew the guy at the dealership and got top dollar for me trade. They did have $17k sticker on it
