Oils, oils, oils
So I got my truck with 78k and the previous owner ran 10w-40 in the truck. So my second oil change I did the 10w-40. Well on the third I did 5w-20 as recommended by the manual and many people on this site. Now I'm not trying to tell you that one is better for this reason or that because I am definitely not an expert on oil, but in my opinion and what I have noticed for the past 4k is that my engine started to tick, run slightly rough, and drop in rpms. So as for my next oil change here in about 500 miles I will be switching back to 10w-40. Anybody else figure the same thing as me?

I ran a 10w 40 for a while to try and help with the tick for a quick fix. Like most quick fixes it didn't work out and was hard to start in the mornings. I went back to Mobil 1 5w 30 and it runs a lot better. The 10w was just a little too thick for the colder temps.

Prepare for a flood of chicken littles saying that your engine will blow up if you don't use 5w-20. I used Mobil 1 5w-30 and it runs great. Be sure to run a Motorcraft filter, that's the important part.

Oil
I was told by the dealer when I purchased my truck to only use the Motorcraft 5w-20 and motorcraft filters. 3 months ago I used Citgo 5w-20 semi-synthetic because wally-world was out of the Motorcraft. When the temps got down to -11, I started it after sitting outside, she ran rough and sounded like a diesel with the ticking and knocking but only until it warmed a little. I have only 65k miles on it. Talked to the dealer and my Ford tech buddy, both said ""Only 5w-20 semi synth and motorcraft filters"". I've used Puralator if I couldn't find a Motorcraft. So after much reading here at this site, I drained some oil, it looked like mud!! Brown, dark and dirty looking, and thats with 1500 miles on it! I usually go 3500 miles on oil and it isn't all that dirty. So I dumped the Citgo and put Motorcraft back in it. I've heard not to skimp on the oil at all, keep it clean, and changed sooner than the 5000 miles the book tells you. I live in the cold upper midwest, yous in the warmer southern states can probably get away with 5w-30 or 40, but I think the semi-synthic or full synthetic is the only way to go no matter what. I hope to not have anymore trouble. Its cold again here, so I'll see in the morning if it sounds like a diesel, clattering and such, if it does, I'll park it and I think it'll be time to go down the road, once it warms up of coarse.. I'm not to into putting a Ford reman motor in it before 100k!
