Default Oil temperature gauge

Since the 5.4L (and probably the 4.6L) has a oil temperature sensor in the oil pan, is it possible to tap into those wires and install an electrical oil temperature gauge?

It would be one hell-of-a-lot easier to use some crazy plumbing fittings and install a second sensor made to match your gauge. EOT is read by the PCM and I think tapping into the wires would screw up its reading. You can get EOT 'VOLTS' from the OBDII system, but that 'thermistor' is not linear at all.

I worked out a formula for Torque Pro to convert the voltage reading into (more useful to humans) degrees F, and found out it took at least a 'quad spline polynomial' (4 bell curves) to fairly accurately match the temperature curve. The GD insane formula looks like this: (0.000000000000006*(((A*256+B)/64)^6))+(-0.000000000023539*(((A*256+B)/64)^5))+(0.000000035224767*(((A*256+B)/64)^4))+(-0.000026002718966*(((A*256+B)/64)^3))+(0.010060545286623*(((A*256+B)/64)^2))+(-2.15299002755322*((A*256+B)/64))+347.216057683581 but Torque Pro is able to sort it out!!!!

If you happen to use the Torque Pro App for OBDII live data monitoring or diagnostics, I posted a dashboard and download file for Torque containing a bunch of temperature stuff here: https://www.f150forum.com/f4/torque-...1/#post5339202

It isn't terribly important for me to see Engine oil temperature, and the process in reading it via that Torque Pro App is entirely too complicated (Doubt a bluetooth OBDII reader would work with my Kenwood DNX893S )

Is that kinda' like my IMSAI 8080 from the 1970's?

If you have an ECT gauge (not the idiot gauge in the instrument cluster), after 30 minutes run time or 20 miles or so, engine oil temp will be near coolant temp. (3-4 degrees below under light cruising - between ECT and CHT under towing / heavier load / acceleration).

What is the ECT and CHT? My actual plan is just adding a Oil Pressure gauge and Transmission Temp gauge on my truck (Both Autometer Ultra Lite gauges, the 4327 and 4357)

Engine Coolant Temperature and Cylinder Head Temperature.

Oh. You're talking about OIL PRESSURE. The 4327. It has an 'electric' sending unit that 'T"s in at your oil pressure sending unit. Completely different animal from what I was thinking awhile ago.

Well, I was originally asking if it was possible to add a oil temperature gauge, but you said that tapping into the wiring wouldn't work anyway because the voltage isn't linear, and that I would be better off if I put in a T adapter.

Now, for the oil pressure gauge. I'm installing the Glowshift Oil Filter Adapter to capture true oil pressure (I'm not the only one who's done it this way on an F-150).

Oil temp is a minor thing . Oil pressure is a whole other thing-very desirable . Transmission temp is also highly desirable. Lack of a good oil pressure gauge is fords boeing mistake just lie to the faa and the customer that thinks he is getting something other than an idiot light . You don't need to know . Our oil pressure gauge reads center scale for anything over 7psi-- pathetic-- we just fool you by making it like a gauge--fraud .Add to that a poor oil pump and the accountants at Ford saved a lot of money .Then tell everyone you can go 100k on plugs . The engineers know better but the sales executives win .Why should the pilots have to know or be able to shut it off or over power it .?? What harm could it do ?

Yeah, the other thing I am planning on adding is the transmission temperature gauge, even though I don't do much hauling.

Personally, I had very erratic pressure readings with the Glowshift adapter. I ditched it for an elbow and get much more stable readings.
