Im waiting to vote my answer as I am getting ready to have the timing done and my mechanic and I haven't decided on which pump to use. I like to see the OEM never replaced leading the way though. Still very early but it kind of goes to show with proper maintenance these trucks don't really have problems. Might help to steer potential buyers towards buying instead of scarring them off with all the horror stories.

What I learned on here a few years back was oil pumps rarely ever have to be replaced because they are arguably the most-lubricated part on the entire truck and hardly wear out

That does make sense. Im going with the theory of 130K miles, some wear and tear creating bigger gaps in oiled parts deserves a better hopefully higher volume pump to make up for those gaps.

True, but in the case of the 5.4L a higher volume/pressure pump is beneficial. If I had my timing cover off I would go with an improved pump too, probably the one makuloco recommended as FordBoy05 said.

Pretty much what Martian said... Oil pump is just not a common failing item. You'd be hard pressed to find anybody that said their 5.4 grenaded cause the oil pump sh** the bed on them.

Update on my oil pump. Timing is almost done and I went with the Melling 10340.
