Default Oil Pressure gauge question

Just a thought, But since our "gauges" are nothing but idiot lights with a needle has anyone ever tried changing the sending unit to the old style variable resistor type? It may not be 100% accurate as far as PSI readings, but it would show drops in pressure.

I think I've seen where this was done or at least attempted.

Sure it'd probably show pressure loss, but at what point are you going to know when it's below acceptable?

Anything below 20 during hot idle is a sure sign of problems, but there's nothing on the dash to tell you when you've hit the point of no return. I feel an aftermarket gauge here is still the way to go.

I seem to remember it was one of those tricks that was used in the late 70's and early 80's but I'm not sure if when you factor in the computer what if anything would happen.

I would love to have a mechanical oil gauge, like nrivera04 said, it would be a tell all.
