Oil FILTER removal PAIN while OIL Change on 5.4l .....
Hello folks, Tried searching for Oil change info for 2006 5.4L, Having a difficult time removing the oil filter due to limited hand movement space up there (with all the harness as well)...Fram chain wrench turned it a bit but No help. Is Oil filter wrench (the circular cap one with nut head) the only option..if so i dont know which size to buy...The one on truck now...Pennzoil is smaller than the New Mobil one i have. Thanks in advance.

You should use mc filter from wally world
each filter has its way of coming off . the mc filter has a real good anti drain back valve . It takes a spline type nut wrench to loosen . a socket wrench , 3/8 flex head socket wrench helps with the right nut type on it is the way to go. See what filter you are fighting go to wally world get right socket for it. Some times you have to use a short 3/8 breaker bar and a piece of sliding pipe but you have to hold socket on with other hand pressing in .
Most guys stick with the mc filter 820s. Fram is a no-no. If you stick with the mc then you only need one socket type. It still is tight in there . Stick with no more than 5k on oil change .
I have had fights on other cars so bad we stuck a screwdriver thru one but it just sheared it off .
You'll get it .

I agree the oil filter is a PITA to remove, I struggle with it each time I'm under my truck. I use MC FL-820s and I've learned that HAND tightening is the way to go.

I had a mobile one filter on my 5.4 last year when I bought it and I went to take it off but that thing was so tight on there it snapped the weld on the filter wrench I bought. Neighbor welded it back together, then my father drilled screws into the side of the wrench so they could act like "teeth" and bite into the filter to get it off. Took like 2 hours.

I just use a clean rag to grip the motorcraft ones. I just did my wifes Expy a couple of days ago and noticed it was significantly easier bc the oil was hot.

I've removed them by reaching in from the engine compartment using strap wrenches from harbor freight
tools,
https://www.harborfreight.com/2-pc-rubber-strap-wrench-set-69373.html
I'd have someone turn the wrench from the top as I was laying underneath positioning the wrench and when it got lose enough I removed it by hand. It took about 15 minutes for me to change the oil.
I've tried other wrenches and I couldn't find any that did the job fast and relatively easy.
Hope this helps,
Paul

If you all are having to use tools to get you filter off .. you are installing it way too tight or it’s been on there way too long.. mine comes off by hand every 5000 Miles.

I wouldn't want to arm wrestle either one of you gorillas. By the time I get my a*s up on the fender or radiator and reach the oil filter (or crawl underneath for that matter) - I'm already so tired I couldn't squeeze juice out of a plumb - let alone unscrew the oil filter by hand.
Oh the joys of the golden years.

Spend the 12 bucks on the proper tool, it’ll take a minute or less to remove with this and a long extension.
good luck
