No, I don't shift into neutral. I do have some mechanical background (auto shop courses and years of successfully and unsuccessfully working on beaters) and definitely understand the implications of that. I shift into neutral in my manual rice burner, and I know its not great for the manual tranny either, but its not nearly as bad.

Here in california, we have all sorts of things they put into the gas to reduce pollution and subsidize corn farmers and what not. There is also a lot of cheap gas floating around. By buying mid grade it helps mitigate those factors. I have extensive testing on this with multiple vehicles and it consistently increases mpg. It also makes me feel good.

As for the tailgate, I think experimentation varies depending on the environment, and I intend to test it out in my environment and see if it helps. I just thought somebody else might have had some personal experience with it.

Does 2 1/2" in the front make such a big deal? Is this because of drag coefficient? Does anybody have input on mpg change with flush top camper shells?

The Gotts mod seems cool, but I stopped making hardware store modifications to my vehicles out of my garage when I gave up mk1 vw's. I don't want to go back. Where is the air filter located on the "cai"'s? I use quotes because I see so many other vehicles with a "cold" air intake with the open filter under the hood. Are there certain brands that go into the fender well?

Okay, but higher octane doesn't accomplish anything unless you advance the timing (providing you're not experiencing pinging). If you are, then mid-grade is the right choice.

Yes it does and yes it is.

Depends on the intake. I don't call them CAIs at all. None of the A/M intakes I know of go to the fender well. That's why I suggested the Gotts mod if you really wanted to modify your intake. Some people want the eye candy and slightly better throttle response.

The 87 gas around here is sh**ty. There, I said it. I get more mpg just because I'm not using gas that sucks (and not in the good way).

My mechanic mentioned a cai that goes into the fender well. I didn't catch a brand. Maybe his head is up his...trunk. Hopefully not.
What does A/M mean?

There are lots of reasons NOT to buy one and other than the noise and eye candy, not many reasons to buy one. Search the forums.

Think of a gallon of milk, then figure you are going to move over 5,000 pounds of steel 12 to 18 miles with that same amount of gasoline. The laws of physics cant be changed. Your driving habits has the most affect to your gas milage, and keep your tires full.

S&B makes a intake that goes into the fender hole i believe its an enclose box that goes into the fender hole

12-18 is a pretty substantial variance. I know I'd be happy if it stayed on the sweeter end. The laws of physics can't be changed, but you can increase efficiency. Or at least not harm it too much. It's not like I'm trying to get rice burner numbers.

As I said before, I would like some performance/throttle response increase, without having to sacrifice little if any mpg.

I know that you don't like "hardware store modifications" but you can't tell that it's been done. You don't see the pvc and you will get the same or even better results than a CAI. Plus I've got about $13.00 in mine, and performance/throttle response.....man what a difference.
