Default Need a New Rear. Recommendations?

Ok so, a few weeks ago I started getting a whining noise coming from the rear of my truck. Fast forward to today, the transmission shop tells me I need a new rear end. $2200 to have used rear installed. Dayum!

So, I'm definitely going to get a second opinion but assuming I really do need a new rear, I'm going to have a buddy give me hand. I have the 8.8 rear with an open/non ls diff.

Any advice on how to go forward with this would be awesome. Should I go with a 9.75. Pull it from a junk yard or buy rebuilt? I'm sure its not the most technical job swapping out a rear. Any help is appreciated.

Pulling from a junker and doing it yourself would be the cheapest route by far. What exactly is wrong with it?

I'd hate for you to slap a rear end in...and all you needed was a fluid change

Yeah really, I took the plug off about a week ago, there were some shavings on the magnet but I thought some shavings would be normal wear? I stuck my pinkey finger in there and the fluid looked clean.

how many miles on your truck?
Metal shavings (depending on miles) are normal wear.
my advice....take the shell off.....service it...inspect it...then see what happens.
50 bucks vs 2200
