I don't think the mosquitos are that bad. Maybe if you live somewhere that doesn't really have them but I've lived in FL and it isn't that different. Also, you should probably pick up a Milepost guide. It'll be well worth the money and shows you everything along the Alaska highway.
As far as money that Alaska gives you it is called the Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) and the last one was $1300-something. Once you get everything in order make sure you check it out and find out when you need to apply. I don't remember the deadlines and stuff but it would suck if you miss out on the 2010 PFD.

Yeah, you get to see whales, icebergs, and other stuff. I might take it when I leave here.

One more thing I just thought of. If possible you should winterize it where you are. Either do it yourself or have have a shop do it. It'll probably cost you an extra 100-200 if you get it done when you get here. All the shops usually do is fill with coolant good to -50 or -60, install a battery pad, oil pan pad, and coolant heater. Sometimes people install transmission pads too. Also there are recirculating coolant heaters.
If you are wanting to get an autostart you should get it done where you are since it will probably be cheaper. Again, they will rape you if you try to get it done here.

60th Anniversary
I just done the drive last month from Ft. Hood,Texas - New Mexico - Arizona - California - Oregon - Washington - British Columbia - Yukon Territory - Alaska, Anchorage. was about 5500miles sounds like the route you'll take. Canada is real expensive now that the dollar went down, and you'll need a passport, so if you haven't got one put in for one tomorrow, ASAP. usually takes two weeks for those. and most of the places in Canada will be closed so whenever you have the chance to fill the tank, take it, and the snow was starting to come down so plan for that the roads weren't bad, mostly paved or pressed but the roads past whitehorse were pretty rough so take it easy . If you want to take the fairy and skip canada it will cost about $1000 bux. the drive though the states is real nice. very nice roads/scenery. for your entertainment there are casinos all along the route from Albuquerque, NM to vegas all the way up to washington.
oh ya, the dividend is the interest money from all of Alaska's resources, you'll need to change your residency to alaska, then after 2 years you'll start getting the dividend the third year. but the state has no state income tax, and if you live in anchorage we dont have a city tax. other than that have a safe trip!!!
