I just got a pair of those quick struts from Amazon. The nuts screw on until the top of the nut is flush with the top of the tower and go no further. I didn't want to strip them so I called Monroe and they are sending out the right nuts. Maybe I have the right ones and I need to use a wrench to tighten them down, I don't know. Figured it was easier to just have Monroe send me the right ones and be done with it.

That's how self-locking nuts work. One end of the nut is crimped and clamps down on the shaft as it threads on. You might just get the same nuts.

Figured it didn't hurt to be sure given previous poster's problem.

I go to ace hardware in this case . Hard to take stud in there tho after its on . I get a collection of nuts then until I find a good match then blue thread lock . I would have carried the second strut one into ace . I have many fights with the metric /sae problems . Just had a big go round with 3/8 square head set screw , found 12 point 3/8 drive 11mm socket was the only one that would work on existing 8 each but the new set screw was a hair off, out came the disk grinder on the corners now they all work . You don't want to screw this up on garage door springs, it will take your head off . Really tight with no help, open end wrench hard to work while holding spring .

I had the same issue with my Saturn L200 Monroe struts (171556/55)
With the plastic ring on them - you don't know until you have turned them down too far and stripped them.
Advanced Auto replaced them but I had to drive to the next city over to pick them up.
I took the new strut to the ACE hardware store.
The strut threads were an ultra-fine while the provided bolt was not the same thread- more coarse (both said 818 on the bolts).
ACE did not have the HARDENED bolts so I reused the old OEM bolts.
I have tried contacting Monroe via e-mail with no response.

Same issue for me with Moog. They sent Gall Nuts. Good times!
