Default Misfire

Good morning everyone... Yesterday while at a stop light my truck started sputturing. It stopped as soon as I put in nuetral and gave it some gas. Did this a few times. Also truck felt like it was lacking power. Didnt want to down shift... etc. Ok then I am in the drive-thru yesterday and it does it again only this time it gave me a ses light. This is my first gas motor. I have nothing but diesels. Where do I start? Truck runs good still and has power but now has a ses light... Any thoughts?

My first thought is a clogged fuel filter. Second is a bad coil-on-plug.

Assuming you don't have a code reader, I'd take it to Auto Zone or some other shop that will pull the codes for you, then go from there.

Ive got a buddy with a code reader and we're going to take a look at the codes today when he gets off work. Where is the fuel filter located? Easy to swap? Specific brand that you recommend? Are the coil packs on top of the spark plus expensive? Hard to fix?

Here's a link on changing the fuel filter:

Personally, no matter what codes you get, I'd change it if it's got more than about 15,000 miles on it.

The coil packs are pretty simple to change, and can be anywhere from about $20 (ebay off-brand) to $45-ish for OEM Motorcraft at Rock Auto.

Hopefuly the code will tell you your problem. What engine is in your truck? If it is a 5.4 becareful taking the plugs out and read the sticky at the top of the 04 - 08 section. But check everything before taking a plug out becausethey will break. If its a 4.6 the plugs won't break and you have nothing to worry about.

Also I just had my oil changed at the local Ford dealership last Thursday. Not sure that has anything to do with it but figured it might be relevant info... Anyone know about this code?
