Default Purchasing an F150

Hey! I'm new here and will soon be buying my first car/truck. I need a truck for farm work and off roading and just everyday hauling and chores (not a mall crawler). I've decided that I will be getting an F150 (dad has a raptor, has had several F150s before). I've saved up my money on my own and have around 14,000. I am looking at several higher mileage Black 04-06 Crew Cab Lariats in the area. I will be getting a couple of them third party inspected soon by my mechanic, for spark plug flaws etc, so I will know the truck I buy isn't mechanically flawed. They have between 120k and 150k miles, and I just had a couple questions, and wanted to check in.

For an 05 Lariat with around 150k miles that has pretty much all the options, what would a fair purchase price be (dealer is asking 12k)?

Would you suggest not getting an 04 over an 05 or 06 because of problems being fixed or no?

How many of y'all are from Garner or Wilmington NC?

In the future I will definitely be modifying it when I have more money and the truck's going to be called the Blackhawk ! I've looked at lots of the member's here build threads and there really are some beautiful trucks!

I don't have access to a computer right now, but I'll definitely post some pictures of my dad's raptors and some of his older lifted F150s if any of you are interested in seeing pictures. I know that they're not mine and are my dad's, but I still love driving them from time to time, and I'm sure all of you will appreciate the work put into them! All work is done in our garage, built not bought!

Hello, and GEAUX LSU!

Edit: a sincere apology if this is the wrong section since it probably is. I'm having trouble navigating these forums on my phone.

From what I've read the 07+ seem to be the most reliable years. My '04 has been nothing but trouble and the '05-'06 had crappy fuel injectors that can stick open or closed.

I purchased my '04 for $8,000 with under 100,000 miles on it. But granted it's not a lariat it's an XLT, and it's also 2wd. However check out Craigslist, I see plenty in my area for much cheaper with less miles then that, I'd also look up the value on Kelly blue book just to get a better estimate. Take your time, but trust me, you won't regret buying an f150. Bought mine when I was 16 and love it to death. Only wish I was a little more patient and waited around for a 4x4 but I got a pretty good deal so it's alright. Good luck, post pictures when you finally pull the trigger!

Paid $13,500 for a 2005 FX4 w/ 82k on it late last year. No leather/sunroof/nav but it does have power everything etc. Personally think I overpaid but that's probably just my opinion. The truck is pretty damn clean overall.

I will definitely post pictures! I will be getting an F150 for sure, it's just a matter of when. My dad's always been a Ford guy and so have I and we've had way too many of them, only had one '01 Chevy which is now a beach rig cuz it gives us nothing on problems on the road. Also, I'll check out craigslist I remember us having to buy tires off there once when we weren't passing inspection and we got a killer deal!

Wow, your truck is beautiful.. If only I could find something like that in the area. I don't need sunroof or nav so those were just extra +'s on the truck. I need leather because when I have friends in it/hunting gear/mud I don't want it getting all messy. Do you think that there's lots of room to haggle when buying these trucks used? I know when we bought the raptor we paid over MSRP but on the '11 lariat we had before it we must've gotten like 10k off of the sticker price.

Yeah that's what I've been reading too, but after reading around a lot I don't know how big of a problem it actually is, so I'm having trouble deciding.

That truck was marked $17,988 MARKED DOWN from $19,985 when I took it off the lot. I paid $13,500 + TTL (dealer fees included). I'd say there's plenty of room to haggle. If they won't just walk out, they'll immediately get a manger who will.

Also keep in mind the truck was not that clean when I got it. I've done a lot to get her looking that way. Here's a pic of her the day I brought her home but AFTER her first coat of wax (which made a HUGE difference)

So far (visually) I've done several buffs/waxes, re-polished and re-surfaced the wheels to fix some curb rash, replaced fog light assemblies, upgraded headlights to retrofits, blacked out faded/beat up emblems, and heat-gunned the fender flares and bed rails.

I got my xlt 2wd with 90k for $10,500 out the door. Plus I made them change all the fluids, filters, and spark plugs! and give me 6 or 700 for new tires.

Day I bought it

Wow it seems like vehicles are way cheaper where y'all live than where I live. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow, good luck to me! Inspection checked out on an 06 Lariat with 120k 4x4 supercrew they are asking 15,000 (I'll see what I can do from there) Hopefully I can leave tomorrow in a new truck!

Also, all of these truck pics are making me jealous! They're beautiful!

Edit: it also has newish fluids and plugs like the above poster said.

Have you considered looking at new vehicles? 15k is a very nice downpayment and if your credit is good, you have more haggling room. Even if you find a 4x4 XLT that doesn't have all of the toys...for about 30k or maybe less since the dealers would like to move inventory, you have the opportunity to get a new truck and build your credit at the same time. And yes, it is an important thing to do, you will be looking at homes before you know it.
