All parts except gaskets (Fel-Pro), oil pump (M360), and water pump (Stant/Gates) are Ford OEM.

I'm confident I'll get this engine purring.

Next I'm going to ascertain if I need new heads as I discovered some spalling on some of the cam caps. Cam lobes are good and journals don't look too bad.
Yep check around I have seen some real good prices on 5.4 heads and stuff on graigs list and flea bag. With all the new upgrades on the ford timing parts on my recent 3k trip I did not burn any oil and had a ton of power running at 2k on the tach hitting 75 all day.averaged 0n way up about 17 on way back nearly 19 MPG Yep i used felpro gaskets also. Next is to change intake gasket as the lean code came back and I dealt with everything else and somewhere on here someone posted the culprit being the intake.

@F150Torqued

Yes I was hoping for a little better condition on the caps. After cleaning and inspecting again, it's a toss up if I want to try and reuse them or just get new heads. Rockauto has a pair of reman heads with cams for $1600 CAD ($1176 US) shipped and would be here by Friday.

Decisions. Leaning towards ordering them and selling the old heads after finished cleaning.

@ Eric Kleven

I checked everywhere here (Calgary) for Plastigage and none to be found. At least the places I could make it to during business hours. Some racers I know have mentioned using it.

You're right about the oil not getting past the grooves to leak, but if it increases the chance of cam movement, not sure I want to risk tearing into the engine again. I'm just too busy and no break in the near future.

The front caps are in perfect shape and the only ones with no spalling. They all cleaned up nicely after an overnight soak in carb cleaner.

@ceasefire49

Glad to hear you had successful results with yours. It's encouraging.

I'm still wrestling with those exhaust manifold bolts. The two bolts to the cats came off no problem, but access to the rest of the bolts, especially the lower ones, is marginal at best. Only 7 more painful ones to go.

One weird finding last night; I pulled out only 11 followers in the left head. Wondering if the last one above cylinder 8 is buried in the remaining sludge.

Also forgot to mention, if anyone has any solutions, the crankshaft sprocket will start sliding forward, but near the end, it gets stuck.

Would it be safe to use a gear or steering wheel puller?

Like to see how much carbon buildup you have on the bottom of the heads-around the valves.
