Major Sludge Found Under Valve Cover

Ordered rollers and lash adjusters. Will be here next week.
Have the driver side pristine and will tackle removing the passenger side valve cover this weekend. One good thing I noticed is that there is a little of the carb cleaner trickling its way down to the oil pan. Will inspect and clean pickup screen and timing chain area as well as see if chain, tensioners, and guides are ok to leave in for a couple cleaning flushes.
I'll have to confirm that the timing is accurate because when I initially went to start it after purchase, it would backfire through the intake. Couldn't just be the sludged up condition?

Run a diesel clean through it. Fill the engine with diesel instead of oil, and run the engine at idle for 30-45 seconds. I have done this for years across many different types of engines and platforms with no issues, despite others speculation on damaging the engine or sensors. This is a good way to clean all of the engine.

The problem with cleaning this engine is more sludge breaks free and fully clogs the oil passages. Can't hurt much with this one but don't do it with new parts they may not receive oil. I'd clean it then put new parts in if you can.

That's what I'm going to do. No new parts until second tear down. Cams look ok - just a slight wear pattern where the roller travels around the lobe. Lobes feel smooth.

Well as said before keep us updated because I'm curious how it turns out.

Junk can "ONLY" get into the oil galleys and small passageways via the oil filter. The OP must mainly be extremely cautious in guarding against any filth getting in oil passageways when he opens something up or changes Oil filter. Otherwise, he should be able to clean it vigorously and nothing gets into passageways. I believe oil passageways would be clean because oil moving through them is HOT, moisture free, and constantly moving.
It is an interesting case, and I am going to be monitoring also. Good Luck

Hey @StephenG, respectfully - I agree with @Hooah.soldier. I would even go further - remove the Pan and place a washtub under it and literally 'poor' diesel and/or strong cleaner all over / down the oil drain passages through the heads back into the lower end.
