MAF Sensor Melted
2005 5.4 XLT. My MAF sensor has melted right in the bottom middle of the unit (dripping downward into air flow). No codes. The sensor does have 96000 miles on it so I guess it's time to change it out. Anyone had this issue before? Could something else be wrong like too much juice going to the sensor when it cleans itself?
I didn't know the MAF's had a "self cleaning" feature. I must not have noticed that option box.
I would say use a DVOM to make sure that the thing is getting proper current and if not, it may have just shorted out and the end result was a melting condition.
Replace it with a salvage yard unit that way you can monitor and if it happens again, you didnt shell out massive amounts of cheddar on a new one.

Never heard of a self cleaning feature for MAF's....but Lenn is on with the current issue I would definitely check that out. A melting MAF is a new one unless it has been moved due to aftermarket alterations . Is it all OEM or have you moved stuff around?
Haven't moved anything around, it's all OEM so far.
The MAF does heat up occasionally to burn stuff off that gets caked on so that's probably what happened and maybe it got too hot or is running that cleaning cycle too much because there is so much junk on it. I cleaned it with some electrical cleaner so we'll see what happens until I replace it with another. Good idea though to get a used one to see if that one melts on me.
