Default Looking for a start point on my 2004 Ford F150

Hello everyone,

New to the forum. I'm making some repairs and I was seeing if I could get some assistance on what the next step would be. Here's a rough timeline on whats going on:

3/16 Got the Truck with a P0012 code. Would run rough at 45-50 mph but would smooth out.
Occasionally a lean code appeared but disappeared when I used fuel injector cleaner.
4/16 Changed oil/filter to synthetic. This is when things hit the fan. Starting getting random codes(misfiring, lean, catalytic converter) Afterwards started idling extremely low, occasionally cutting off when I made a stop.
5/16 Changed the VCT solenoids. Engine dies at stop/slow turn.
9/16 Changed spark plugs/coil boots. Rough idle at 45-50 disappeared. Still dies a stop/slow turn.

Thought at starting with the fuel filter and cleaning the throttle body. Seeing if I should be looking elsewhere.

Check your FPDM, fuel pump drive module. They rot away and are always a problem. It's located under your spare tire attached to the frame.

I would remove throttle body and give it a through cleaning with Throttle Body cleaner and a brush. I posted a link earlier to a Ford Tech's you tube that shows how to do the relearn process after you reinstall the TB. Make sure you disconnect negative battery lead prior to removing it though. Mine was acting the same way once the engine was up to operating temp, it would darn near die at stops as the idle would hit about 100-200 RPM. Cleaned it and did the relearn process and all is good. HTH

Clean the mass air flow sensor. Is the new air filter oiled? If it was not oiled properly the oil will mess up the MAF sensor. When you clean it use ONLY MAF sensor cleaner. Don't touch it, and be very careful with it. If cleaning it doesn't help you may need a new one. If the air filter is not oiled I would still clean the TB as mentioned above, clean the MAF sensor and check the FPDM as well. All relatively cheap fixes that and help with your described problem.

Ford Vehicles: Electronic Throttle Body Relearn Procedure - YouTube
Currently working on the throttle body now. The intake side looked fine. The other side looks like crap though.

Default Update on Repairs

Cleaned the throttle and did the relearn procedure. Got it to the point when I changed the oil where it would idle funny but stay running. Hopefully these videos might give a clue. Currently, the only pending codes are P0012 and P2196.

You need to do a full timing job..... and cross your fingers.

Agreed, much bigger problems. Time for heart surgery.

I suspected it may have been a timing/phaser issue. I was hoping for the simpler solution. Guess I'll get the phasers on order.
