Not too sure about the Chevy/GMC but the Ram 1500 also has a fully boxed in frame. Ford's is stronger though, being that it has hydroformed sections, thicker gauge steel and full weld through crossmembers. When I look underneathe my Ram 1500 I can see it was almost like Dodge copied Ford's idea.

Hell in Alberta almost everyone drives a damn 1-tonne diesel! Half tonnes are considered wussy trucks for labourers. Keep in mind the difference in fuel economy between a 4.6 and 5.4 is very minimal, although the maintenance costs are higher. Here in Vancouver it is the same, almost all F-150s are 5.4s but you still can find the odd 4.6 or 4.2 motor.

Yup, the XLT is a step above the base XL and the XTR is an appearance and option package. I think you can only get XTRs in 4x4, but I'm not 100% sure.

xtr's are available in 2x4 also a guy i work with has one. i think its a tire and rim upgrade mostly but not sure
