Live-Wire Direct connection?

Live-link Gen-II Direct connection?
Good afternoon
I need to data log my 2007 F-150. The cable that came with my X4 plugs into my HP laptop. Question is, can I plug the cable directly from my lap top to my OBD-II port on my truck and data-log with Live-Link or do I have to plug my laptop into my X4 and my X4 into my OBD-II port? I emailed 5-Star and asked them the same question but I wanted to get y'all s opinion as well. The live-link directions say to use the X4. Thank you!
