Life Expectancy for the 5.4L
I'm looking at a few 2004-2005 F150 4X4's with the 5.4L engine. I need this truck to last for a few years while I finish up college. My budget is sort of tight since I was in a wreck recently and had to pay for what insurance didn't cover.
How many miles can I expect out of such a truck with good maintenance?

My dad had a 99 F250 5.4, 5spd, 4x2. Drove it to 200,000miles. Alot of highway but also a decent bit of pulling. 3600lb boat, 2400lb flat bed with 8000lb Tractor, 28ft gooseneck stock trailer loaded with cattle. You get the drift. Sold it at 200k. The guy that bought it drove it to 315000 miles and traded it in. Nothing more than basic maintenance. Dad now has an identical truck except 01, auto trans. Over 200,000 miles (not sure on exact amount, around 230k something I think). Basic maintenance and 1 trans. Hope that helps.

Except for my 5.4L Triton that was driven lots of highway miles [rarely pulled a load], with oil changed regularly and taken care of. I hit 102,000 miles - and had to change the engine. When I bought it I thought it would easily make 200K and more, but it was not to be.
There will always be a few trucks that just won't make it, regardless of the care received. It's just the law of probability.

"There's more Ford trucks on the road with over 250,000 miles on them than any other truck"

Your best bet is a Ford brother! My 04 150 S-crew 4x4 has 140,000 and it runs better than the day it rolled out of the factory. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 140,000 miles on it and it is falling apart, smoking, rattling, 4x4 whining, interior is worn out, etc. Definitely would not have made the journey from FL to CA and back with a trailer last Nov. like the trusty F-150 did.

There have been reports of 5.4L getting over 1 Million miles, so they will last.

All depends on if you buy new or used, and how well you maintain the truck overall and how many miles you put on per year. I'd expect a minimum of 250k if taken care of. If you buy used, you always have to worry about how the prior owner may have abused the truck and how well it was maintained. So it's hard to say, but I'd take my chances with a Ford and 5.4L over any other make/model/motor full-size truck.
EDIT: I'd expect problems from many other items (alternator, fuel pump, etc) before I'd expect the 5.4L to give up the ghost.
