Lets Talk towing

Your Ranger and 4.0 was way overloaded if you towed a trailer with a car on it for starters.
Second, trailer brake controllers have been around for decades, you not using one is from ignorance not because they were not around or not needed. They were just not factory installed. My 04 F150 has a towing package and no factory controller, I had to add it.
I can remember the brake controller in my dads Oldsmobile towing our TT when I was a kid and that's in the 1970's.
Just because you did something unsafe and illegal does not make it right, a good idea or a reason to suggest it to someone else. You are not just putting yourself in danger but everyone else on the road when you cannot stop your load in an emergency situation.

Seriously you may want to inflate the tires up to the maximum or there about.
Gives for a better ride when towing IMO.

I tow an 18" equipment hauler that weighs about 2700# empty and is rated for 14000 GVWR. The F150 pulls it fine but you know it's there. I do heavy towing with my 2007 Expedition EL since it's built on a 3/4 frame and pulls so much better than the F150. With that being said, based on my experience, I would strongly recommend the Roadmaster Active Suspension. I don't have it installed on my truck, yet, but it's a future mod. 3/4 of a cord of wood had the truck sitting on the bump stops and made steering squirmy. I had the RAS on a 3/4 ton Dodge 4x4 gasser towing a 10k Fiver and it was like butter. They give tremendous control and only take a few minutes to adjust with a socket wrench. Set it and forget it. Just remember the limitations in your receiver. The RAS does not make any adjustments to this weight ratings while a load leveling hitch will. The RAS controls sway, truck leveling and axle wrap. http://www.activesuspension.com/
