Default Knowing you NEED spark plugs

Anyone on this forum actually KNOW that it was time to put spark plugs in their 5.4 triton engine. I mean did you start getting bad gas miles and running rough with acceleration and stuff like that. My truck has 56K on it, and its deff time for a tune up.

I don't have the 5.4 but my truck wouldn't accelerate, felt like tires slipping. It was worse in the rain. Plugs were toasted, replaced and truck runs amazing.

I had a low grade misfire from 45-50mph in OD. Once I replaced the plugs it idled smoother, accelerated better and took care of my misfire. My mileage stayed the same though. I'd replace them if I was you, Ford changed the service interval from 100,000 miles to 60,000 so you're about due.

If you're somewhat mechanically inclined you can replace them yourself and save some (a lot) money. It cost me around $200 for plugs, new boots, lisle tool, 5.4 3V spark plug socket and anti seize for the shank. It's not hard, just time consuming.

Here's one of the plugs. They had 118,000 miles on them IIRC, as you can see they were shot.

Mine also had a shutter in OD about 45-55mph. I also had a terrible shutter under WOT merging on the express way. It almost felt like wheel hop. I broke six of eight plugs. I let them soak 24hrs with some crc knocker loose. Make sure you torque them down to 25ftlbs. If not you will get a gas smell in cab like I did. Good luck.

80k miles. It's a 2006. If you can find a cheap pair of plug pliers, those help out a lot.

I got my plugs changed about 40k ago at the dealer. Thinking about going ahead and changing them now just so I don't have to worry about any breaking. Should I still be afraid of breaking with only 40k on them
