Just sayin'
Just to share why I'm here, possibly in common with others. In my world a truck is for hauling and towing, not daily use, but often needed to support household, family and friends or my automotive leanings in Swedish cars..
The 2005 5.4 XLT with 270K was idling smoothly in park at the mailbox, then suddenly stopped running, no cough or sputter, solid stop. Good fuel, good fluids, good battery, even a good driver. Turn key to restart gets normal starter engagement, but no spin, a solid no crank. Engine is locked up, rebuild or new truck needed, the latter chosen. Will stay in this generation for potential use of my new 05 parts truck.
The 2008 4.6 FX2 with 203K is local and seems a quick and cheap replacement. Many little issues, but quick starting and smooth running with less than year old tires. One major issue, the trans gets through 1st and 2nd very well, but no further. Tops out at 60+ mph at 4K rpm. Me - OK, I'll take it for much less than ask and fix it. Seller - OK.
I do drive it for needed uses, carefully and slowly for maybe 250 miles, no new problems. New old trans obtained, checked over and then put in with son-in-laws able assistance. Other minor issues have been fixed along the way, all new fluids and now it still runs well but also drives well using all the gears as it should. After about 500 miles on the new old trans, I'm into it for a very reasonable cost and most issues are gone. Though we have several vehicles, this '08 has become the newest, taking honors from my wife's '07, the former, long-standing newest, mostly because I'm cheap and never want debt or vehicles with screens.
I'll hang around to learn from the crowd and chime in when I think it might be helpful.
