Default Just bought this truck, ticking

I just bought an 08 with the 5.4l yesterday, and i can hear a tiny bit of ticking under acceleration. when I cold start it, the ticking is louder for about 10 seconds then dissapears to almost nothing. After coming to the forums here i'm thinking i should return this truck asap. I tried to see what oil filter it has thinking its a drain valve issue but, I cant see any writing on the filter, it's blue in color. I checked the oil and it looks fresh. Any thoughts?

How many miles on the engine? and can you kinda tell where the ticking is such as top of motor and does it increase with rpm? Try power braking aka stall test and see if it gets more notice able or worse! Let me know after that!

sounds like a exhaust manifold leak to me!! Especially when you say you hear it on cold start and it goes away until the engine is under load.

Do me a favor, park the truck, then apply brake with left foot, then put into Drive. Then apply some acceleration without burning out while keeping the brake applied. You should hear the ticking. If so, have a second person walk around the sides to see which side of the engine its coming from.

My bet is that your passenger side exhaust manifold has a blown gasket or is cracked.

Mine made same noise. Turned out to be the far back exhaust port, the gasket had failed. Purchases a new Dorman Manifold and some Dorman studs and spent 7 hours replacing it.

However, if the dealership sold it to you, see if they will fix it.

^^My ticking was this

Basically determines timing for the engine the sensor is right on top of the heads just below valve cover! Look them up and Im sure you will see pictures of it!

I did the power brake test. It became a little more noticable, not super loud though. then when i return to idle it disappears. when i rev engine in nuetral its just a very slight tick. I couldn't tell which side it was coming from but i was by myself so i tried to listen at idle.

hmmm may not be my theory then.... Mine would disappear on idle and would not do it in neutral, only when ending was under a load

Sounds like your cam phaser is going out! YouTube search cam phaser noise and see if that's what your hearing

hmmmm I just listened to a bunch on youtube, I think it may be the exhaust leak afterall. The cam phaser sounds louder and more of a knock. Mine seems to be a faster quieter tick, like the exhaust manifold leaks I listened to. A couple of the guys described exactly whats happening with my truck which also makes me believe it could be the leak. I am going to go to the dealer anyway to resolve this, I appreciate your help!! I will follow up once I know what the deal is.
