is that part number above (6L3Z-9E441-A) correct? Tasca claims that it's not a valid part number....

confirmation please.

i think that's the right one, Tasca has some some jackasses working the phones, when i needed to order an actuator last time, the guy practically refused to get off his *** and look it up without a vin number, told me he didn't wanna give me the wrong part, so i asked to talk to someone else who knew the hell he was doing, so i argued with him and hung up on him. called back with the vin and they jackass sent me the wrong cv nut. he tried to tell me that the computer showed 3 different actuators for that truck, BS, there is 1, nothing like having someone who knows nothing working behind a parts counter, oh wait it's like that all order, it's sad

The shop said the actuators and solenoid needed to also be replaced. I told them no because they wanted $700 on top of the $1050 I just paid for two new hubs. The shop is a high dollar place so yes, I know I got screwed, but I am in an apartment right now with all my tools in storage 90 miles away.

I bought the solenoid myself and put it on. After driving it some more, both sides are still making the noise. I think both actuators are bad. I saw your post in another thread about how to replace them and it is definetely within my capabilites, I just need to find a time and a place. I really want to confirm the actuators are bad, so I am off after work in search of a vaccuum pressure gauge. Advance did not carry one, but said AutoZone did.

This happend also at 20k miles and was fixed under warrantly. Not a peep out of them until this weekend(135k miles) when I was trying to pull a Powerstroke out of a tank. I head a pop, but never really lost front pull. Strangely, there was gear oil coming from atop the diff. I wiped it off and have seen no oil since, but have been getting the grinding noise. Now I have $1000 worth of hubs on there that are probably being damaged because the actuators were not replaced. It has been a bad day.

it sounds like you may have destroyed the front ring and pinion, it's odd for oil to come from the diff for no reason, hanking on something can easily destroy the front diff.

if you vaccum check the sysytem you can pretty much pinpoint where the issue is with the 4x4 system, i would throw a fit and ask whhy everything was replaced, i bet the retards couldn't figure it out and just replaced everything, just another shop trying to get fat by screwing people over.

for the vaccum checking, take it to your ford dealer, it may cost ya 50 bucks but they can tell you exactly what you need to have replaced, i would bet money that would had parts that weren't bad, replaced.

Well I took it back to the shop and they replaced both hub actuators. I can now shift back into 2wd and drive without noise. BUT! I just got home from a 200 mile round trip. The noise is back, at highway speeds. Cruising on level pavement at 70, no noise. As soon as it starts to climb an overpass, the noise starts. When I reach the top, it quits. It is the same exact noise!

So to recap, the truck has new autolock hubs, new hub actuators, and a new solenoid with a rain cover (FYI, I had get teh parts guy to look up an 06 to get the solenoid with the cover. My truck is 04) No more noise around town, but at 70mph, 1800rpms, it will make the noise when going up an incline. Sometimes, the RPMs do not even change going over the overpass, put it will make the noise still.

When engaging 4wd, the front tires pull like normal, no problems. That makes me think the R/P is ok. My thoughts are a small vaccuum leak somewhere, a bad CV shaft at the diff, or maybe something with the diff itself. The oil thing I can not explain. The CVs and the r/p not turning while going down the highway really makes me think it is just something vaccuum related.

Very frusterated.

of all the f150's we've worked on we only had one 04 with issues, weird, we put in the updated IWE solenoid and a new actuator.

Default Vacuum system

I believe you are on the right track. After several tests they (Ford) found that my vacuum box was bad and replaced it. Since then I've not heard that sound. And I guess to boot, they put in the lastest solenoid (with the cover) as we've had several steady rains since this problem last occured and no noises.

Default F-150

Hey Pete,

In PA. Almost the same story here, however before I got my first f-150 (2001 model) I had a bad experience with the Chevy which fortunately was on a lease - that thing was in shop almost every other month. A friend of mine had a Dodge Ram and had nothing but problems not long after taking it off the lot - finally went the lemon law route.

So when it came time purchase a truck again, I went the Ford F-150 route. If it weren't for these two isolated solenoid/vacuum system
issues, I'd have had none of any signifigance.

Pound for pound I'd say I agree with you - Ford has the competition beat and they solidly built and engineered.

I wondering now what the feedback is on the new (2009) model. They are nice looking trucks - but I sense my wife won't be letting me get one any time soon

Regards,
Paul

Did my homework regarding the purchasing a truck.I was told to stay away fron Chevy&dodge.35K miles is what I had on it when I bought it&now it has 46K miles on it.Maintenance im all over this thing.
Like anything else, things do go wrong.Ive learned alot on this forum myself&saved my self a ton of dinero doing the needed repairs.Great we can share our enthusiasm for our beloved trucks.
Ford I believe has the competition beat.They are a good value&engineered well.Take care,Pete

Default Another homemade solenoid shield

I used the top of a crystal light lemonade plastic jar, put 2 slots in it up front to fold above the electrics and 1 slot in the back so it has a "tab" that slides behind the bracket. A bit of black silicone along the back bracket slot seals the slot and secures it in place. This covers more of the solenoid than the Ford "upgrade", and looks better than the cover by Rnger3rd shown earlier (not dissin you dude thanks for the inspiration) I should of painted it black! Anyway this took 10 minutes but 52 years to develop the brain power to achieve!
