Iwe solenoid
I have an intermittent grinding noise from my front left wheel that I believe is due to the iwe solenoid not fully disengaging. I will be changing the part tonight. If I put the truck in 4high, the problem doesn't exist. Do you guys think it is the iwe solenoid? I sure hope so.

That would be my first choice...very common failure

Well I changed the part and it seems less intermittent, but still happened twice on the twenty miles to work. Any suggestions as to what it may be? Or do I need to put it in four low to fully engage it, then return to 2wd? I have shifted to four high and back out, just to see if the 4wd works, which it does.

Follow the air lines to each IWE and check for leaks...a Vacuum pump is great to have for troubleshooting this problem...

Here's the links for trouble shooting and replacing IWEs if it comes to that.

I didn't own a vacuum gauge (you may be able to borrow/rent one) before having to repair/replace my IWEs either. I do like having one though. The one I bought had a little tub for bleeding the brakes as part of a kit. Nice to be able to bleed the brakes without having to sweet-talk somebody to work the pedal. I went ahead and flushed all my brake lines and replaced all the pads while I was doing the IWE work. Between the IWEs and brakes I saved 300-400 dollars in labor charges.

Well something weird happened. I was heading to the mountains and it was making the periodic grinding sound. Real sporadic. So I kicked it in 4high for 10 miles or so, then kicked it back in 2wd, and for the forty miles since, no noise. Fingers crossed to see that it stays away.
