I'm having clutch problems
 
Ok, let me start by saying that I'm no mechanic or gearhead. I have a 2007 f-150 XL 4.2L. The truck has a manual tranny and in the last few days I've had a problem developing with my clutch. There is a ton of play in the pedal. When I start my truck I can't get the truck in gear until its been running for about 5 minutes. It seems like once it's warmed up a little it shifts just fine. I don't know if there is a clutch adjustment I can do or what. Thanks in advance for any help y'all can give.

sounds like the clutch slave is either in need of adjustment or replacement.

Master or Slave cylinder or Yoke but you may also be having pressure plate issues, I would start with the Master cylinder and keep going from there until fixed.

How many miles are on the clutch? It may just be worn to the point of needing replacement. Has it been slipping prior to this current situation?

You're a lucky one for having a manual. My only "wish" to my 4.2 would be to have had a manual tranny.

I have 70k on the truck. Every time I drive it it gets a little worst. What I'm noticing now is that when in stopped at a light I have to keep it in gear so I don't run the risk of not getting in to 1st or 2nd. Also when it's in gear at a light I have the clutch to the floor and it's still moving. The clutch isn't keeping the tranny disengaged.

I'd get it checked by a shop if you're not mechanically inclined. It sure sounds to me like the pressure plate and/or clutch are worn out. In the old days, you had an adjustment to bring the throw out bearing closer to the pressure plate. Today'sunits are no longer "mechanical", and use fluid (clutch cylinder) to provide an easy clutch pedal.

If you've checked the clutch fluid level and it's at it's correct fill mark (indicating no leaks), then I'd say your due for a replacement clutch and pressure plate.

About how much am I looking at spending if I need to change the slave cylinder or master cylinder?

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I thought it would be better than starting a new one. I have an 02 4.2 and it has just developed a slight amount of play in the pedal. Truck has 131K miles on it, had the slave replaced around 75K miles, and the clutch replaced at 95K miles (which is now chattering violently). I'm getting tired of dropping the transmission on this truck and really don't believe that parts are wearing out this quickly. I've had it for three years, (bought with 67K miles on it) and since the clutch was last replaced (due to a seized TB) it hasn't seen a trailer over 2500lbs. Any suggestions?

What type of clutch did you use ("bargin brand")? Did you have the flywheel turned when the clutch was replaced? Chattering is a sign of "hot spots" on the flywheel, and the only way to stop the chattering is to have the clutch surface on the flywheel turned by a machine shop; something that should be done whenever clutch replacement is done.
