It looks like a metal insert that is pressed in or bolted in from the back. My question is: can I just take the piece that broke off, screw it on the bolt and screw in the whole assembly and it hold the stress of the belt. I have it done this way but have not fired it off yet. If not OK, how the heck do I get the threaded insert that is broken out?

I wouldn't. If it's indeed threaded from the back side so that you cannot unscrew it out the front, I'm afraid the only solution is to take the timing cover off.

Thanks to ebay, heres a pic of the back of the timing cover. Looks like its not bolted in from the back, just pressed in or some home screwed in. Any ideas how to remove or get it out?

Here's a pic of the front. You can see where the mount sticks out about half an inch. It is the same diameter as the inside of the bearing to hold it in place.

Hold and weld a bolt on top of that metal, and it should come off.
