Well, after a year of heavy use and light towing, the timing system waved the white flag yesterday. She'll start and run fine, but after the motor warms up, it'll shake at times and I can't keep highway speeds. No check engine lites, but I've lurked on this forum for a year now and there is no doubt I need a timing job. I bought this rig thinking, with 197 on the clock, the timing "HAD" to be done already. U absolutely can't get up that high in mileage without doing the timing lol....yeah right. I knew I was taking a chance. Immediately thought reman, but u know how that goes. you'll get the motor and the tranny will go. I'll consider the junkyard, but I think I am going to try a new timing set and see if I can hack it in...I can spin a wrench fairly well and there is Plenty of Know-how in this forum. damn right after I just bought a bed cover and wheels.

If you need to put the timing job off for a little while, go on down to Home Depot and pick up a couple gallons of Rotella 5w-40. That'll keep it alive for a pretty long time, while you get parts and schedules together.

^^ Yeah, that. Stabilizes the VCT system, keeps the freek-outs away. A xw-30 weight might also do it, but mine was right on the edge with Chevron Delo synthetic 10w-30 diesel oil.
Now's a good time to throw a quart of Marvel's Mystery Oil in the oil pan, too. Diesel oil is a pretty good cleaner, and will keep any crud dissolved. See if your oil turns blacker than black in a couple thousand miles. It won't thin down the mix too much.

Update..
yesterday the truck gave me a code. P2197. Upstream o2 sensor. With the 5-40 Rotella and new 02 sensor, the truck is running great. I can put this job off for a few weeks. Eric, good call mang!!

Do you hear any loud tap-tap-tap valvetrain noises in there?

Plan on around 1400 if you do it right .
Forget about junk yard engines , they run 2500 and up for high mileage . A reman will run around 7500 to 9000 installed .
Timing job is a pain but it is worth doing not much is required in special tools . The only one I used is the cam gear holding tool . If you are careful and study this engine it is very doable .

Cam gear holder, valve spring compressor is nice to have... still have mine, hope I never need them again.
