How to: Remove stuck rear brake rotor
#21
I didn't want to take the chance that I would break or warp the rear rotors, just in case I was not able to remove them. I used a lot of PB Blaster into the holes around the lug bolts, and around the rotor/axle contact point. Using a standard claw hammer to hit the rotor between the protruding lug bolts while rotating the rotor, I hit 4 hard blows between each lug bolt, and repeated about a dozen cycles before the rotor was freed from the axle and lug bolts. A larger hammer would work better, but I used what I had. I will use the high-temp wheel bearing grease as you suggest. Thanks. (Now to the auto parts store to get new rotors)

The rear driver side was missing the rubber plug. Does anyone know where i can pick up a replacement?

That's how it was for me too. First side took forever and didn't get anywhere till I backed off the ebrake. Other side took mins since I backed the ebrake off first!

how do you back off the ebrake? my rotor was stuck like chuck! I used kroil, pry bar, 3 lb sledge, and it didn't budge. I just put everything back and said screw it till another day! now im thinking that the ebrake has something to do with it after reading through the thread. do you have to adjust it after you put new rotors and pads on?

Should be a plug that comes off on the top of the brake assembly. Under the plug should be a slot (used to be a star fitting-T). Loosen this to back off the brake.

5lb. sledge did not work for me
Doing front brakes and rotors yesterday, could not get rotor off. After tapping on it with a small hammer I moved up in size to the trusty mini sledge. Not moving I broke out the mini grinder with an eighth inch thick metal cutting disc. I cut the outside ring in line with one of the holes of a lug bolt I removed. I then tapped a chisel into the cut to spread the casting just a little. Bingo. Will put some high temp grease in when installing the new rotors.

just make sure the E-brake is in fact released prior to beating the **** out of the rotor.. this will hold the rotor on also.

Big problem guys...
I tried this method of removing the rear rotors and in the process broke off the top mounting hole from the caliper mount. (I guess thats what you'd call it)
Does anyone know where to order one of these mounts or what they are actually called.
In case you were wondering, no, the rotor still did not come off.
