4wd issues.. little help please
I have a problem with my 06 F150 engaging in 4wd. When I bought the truck 6 months ago it worked and has when I have engaged it to test it up until now. It began by not engaging although the light on the dash lights up and it shifts into low when selected. I heard no grinding or clicking from the hubs when locked in 2 or 4. I thought that maybe the solenoid was not working and not releasing vacuum causing the hubs to not lock. I replaced it and when testing it again they still would not lock but now get a grinding noise from passenger hub when in 4wd either high or low but not in 2wd. Could the IWE be causing the issue by not fully engaging when vacuum is released? Also if just one side is faulty, would it stop both sides from engaging? I have never owned a vacuum actuated 4wd truck before so I'm trying to make sense of this. The guy I bought the truck from did change the drivers side IWE shortly before I bought the truck. If it matters the truck only has 74k miles on it now.

Thanks for the link. For whatever reason it didn't pull that post while doing a search. I found my problem. Just ordered the new IWE for the passenger side.

Just happened to me this week as well mate... however I didnt consider the iwe's themselves, I just assumed solenoid as I can feel the tc engaging. Guess ill have to test the bugger first before I waste unecessary $. What do the iwes themselves run? I calles the autoparts store about the solenoid already and thats only $160 if thats the case but I assume that the iwes would be a ford part.

Yourr right, I searched advanced autoparts online after posting to see if iwe was available aftermarket or one of those fantastic dealer parts. The parts place must have misunderstood over the phone as the dorman iwes are about 130.00 and the tcm is 160.00. 23.99 for the solenoid from advance but I tend to not use these people. Napa or hovis in this are usually get my business unless theyre out of stock and im in a bind.

VTX... my compliments on the post you shared link to above. A very thorough 10 minute reading that covered the system admirably. Took me a while of playing with my buddies truck to get an understanding of the shift on the fly system as it was something I hadnt played with previously. Great diagnostic instruction to cover the "wear and tear" components.
