Default How do I diagnose bad VCT solenoids?

I just replaced phasers guides chains and tensioners in my 06 5.4 with 110,000 miles. I still have the diesel noise. I used all new parts from autozone. Is there a way to ensure it is the solenoids before ordering and replacing for nothing? I have a edge programmer and I watched the vcam numbers on it and they were the same as my other f150 without any issues. So thoughts on what it could be or is there a sure fire way to tell that it is the VCT solenoids? Thanks for any help.

If you have not updated your solenoids to the latest revision yet then it is highly advised that you do so..

Just pull the easier passenger side solenoid out if you have and 04-06 and take a look at it. If the screens are clogged or damaged then you will be throwing timing codes, having idling issues, or you may be hearing excessive knocking/ticking..

I paid $120 for mine with shipping. I haven't installed them yet though because I haven't ordered the seals yet. You need to get seals at the same time unless you are extremely careful when removing the old ones. But it seems like it is impossible to be that careful based on what I have read haha. So better get seals at the same time.

I got both mine out today (destroyed both seals) and they both look good. Not really what I wanted to see. There was like no sludge buildup or anything. Is it possible for them to fail and show no signs?

I'd still swap them with the new revised solenoids and fresh seals.. It may make a difference..

You could also try jumping up to 5w-30 oil. Fresh solenoids and 5w-30 worked like a charm on my diesel noise.. I also raised my low 500 rpm idle with my edge which also was a contributing factor..

I sure hope it does. It is still making the phaser noise and if this doesn't fix the noise I don't know what else is left.
