Not always.
I put mine back when done.
I actually put 2 in my brother in laws just to screw with whoever drops the pan in the future (not that anyone else will probably ever do it, he will drive it till it dies, same for mine).

I have bought Wix and Motorcraft transmission filters off Amazon, no issue with them. As said, <$20 for them and they work fine.

Been there, done that. Ordered the wrong one and when I dropped the pan I looked at it and said "that right there ain't right" Ran up to O'Reillys and they had one in stock.

Well i finally got around to it today, dropped the pan and replaced the pan and filter. Yes the plastic doamahicki was in there. The fluid looked pretty clean for 13 years old. But the truck only has 26k. I torqued the bolts to 12 foot lbs. Is that ok? I might have a little to much fluid in her too. Need to recheck in the morning. If it is over it is only by 3/4 of a quart. I only put in 5 quarts.

Well, when I put 5qts in my truck, I ended up siphoning 1 qt. back out. so, mine only holds 4qts-even thou the manual says more. I have an 06 5.4 with heavy duty cooling/trailer tow pkg.

I also have the towing package, with the oversized transmission cooler up front. Now you have me wondering if I should drain little out of it. She's running fine, took it to the store to get new wipers today after the detail, No problems. Hum...

Mine ran fine with 5qts-but I knew it would cause problems down the road later-so I took out the excess. Yes, mine also has the big auxiliary trans cooler.

I went to drain some this morning. Damn bolt slipped out of my hand and ROLLED DOWN the driveway. Had to scot out from under the truck fetch it, and place it back in. By then 2 and 3/4 quarts came out. Replaced with two new quarts and level is perfect now. Except for tran. fluid stains on the driveway where bolt rolled down.!!

Sorry to hear about your hassle. I took the lazy man's method and used this nice pump from Harbor freight. Took about 10 minutes, but a lot less messy and worked great. I used the small tubing with adapters down the dipstick tube and started pumping. $6.99 on sale!
