help removing timing chain cover 4.6 v8
 

Hi, I should preface this post by saying that I do not have a lot of mechanical experience, and some of these terms may be incorrect, apologies in advance if that creates any confusion. I am in a situation where I can either fix my truck myself, or basically pat for a repair that will cost as much as the truck is worth, and that is why I am attempting to self fix it.
I have a bad cylinder 2 in a 4.6L v8 of a 2007 f150 fx2. I took the truck to a mechanic after the truck started running extremely rough abruptly on the highway, and he did a compression test and told me i was only getting 60 lb of pressure on my number 2 cylinder. The spark plug from that cylinder was missing most of the electrode and the ceramic insulator was gone. He figured the broken plug pieces either damaged the valve or the piston. I am attempting to pull the left head out of the truck right now, i have removed the left valve cover and the manifold cover already. I also pulled the fan and am now trying to get the timing chain cover off. I have a question regarding how to get the remaining parts off the cover. the water pump pulley has 4 little bolts around it, and they really do not want to come off. I got one loose, but it is hitting the hub in front of it. I also don't know how to get the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer out, since it just spins when i turn the bolt. I know i'm in over my head here, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

With the fan, I use a small section of chain and remove one of the small (think they are 10mm hex head bolts) insert it through one end of the chain and reinstall the bolt then do the same with the other end of the chain to a bolt on the actual motor, that way when I go to loosen the fan clutch (think that's a 36mm wrench size, most parts stores will rent you the tool) the chain will hold the clutch steady enough to remove it.
As far as the harmonic balancer, I use an impact gun to loosen and remove the bolt then the harmonic balancer puller to remove the pulley. A parts store will be able to let you rent the puller as well.

thanks a lot. How much pressure does it take to get the balancer bolt off, i have been going at it with an impact gun for about 10 minutes and it wont budge. any ideas?

It should come right off. Unless your using a cheapo impact or undersized compressor.

Yea, a cheap impact gun and/or compressor will not get it done. When I did mine, I didn't have an air compressor, had to use an electric one from Harbor Freight, it worked but since then, I have bought a good compressor and impact gun. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

see picture-- use case hardened metric bolts . Will help torque pulley back on . Use new crank bolt and do 3 step torque per ford . I don't have impact tool either .

You can get training cd on ebay not much $great info .
 

See my home made tool for crank pulley . Also start cardboard story board on all your bolts . Tape bolts in story board so you can remember each location ,put torques and sequence numbers right on card board .

I finally got it. wound up using a breaker bar and hammer, just gave it a few pounds. It didn't seem to be doing much as i was doing it, but the nest time i put the impact wrench to it it came right off.
