Not sure if this is 100% true but I though I read someone once where if you don't turn your AC off before you turn your truck off this can cause a build up of moisture in the AC system. Not sure if this even makes sense but because of it I always turn my AC off a few seconds before my truck.

I had another vehicle that had the same symptom. There was mold/mildew in the vents. Cweaver is right about moisture causing the smell. Here are some ideas;

Bypass the cabin filter parts.

there is a filter in the 04-08, it's below the passenger side glove box. I'm not fully sure how to take it apart though. All 04-08's may not have it, but the lariat and the king ranch both have them so I assume other trim packages do as well.

Do something like a youtube search. I found a video on how to take a raditor out of my daughters Saturn on there. Made things much simpler. Spray some Lysol in the box, as deep as you can get it too. Might take some disassembly. You will smell Lysol for a few days, a small price to pay. Good luck!

pretty much the only way to get rid of the musty smell is to disassemble the evaporator and clean the coil. can anyone else confirm the cabin air filter near the passenger kick panel?
