Help!!!!Am I getting ripped?

Re manufactured motor
Ballpoints
Battery
Struts
3yr 100k mile warrenty

$6,982.00

I have a 2004 F-150 with a shot 5.4l 3v engine.
I am not a mechanic and I don't have the skills or equipment to perform the work myself. Does this look over the top?

donbun68 03-08-2013 08:40 PM

I thought a reman engine went for around $3k. So that's about $4k for the rest of the stuff plus labor. I don't know, sounds high to me.

Bryson 03-08-2013 08:46 PM

Actually tbh that sounds bout right.

Bryson 03-08-2013 08:47 PM

The actual engine isnt the biggie.. The labor is what brings it up there and labor rates the way they are thats about right in my opinion at least

donbun68 03-08-2013 08:53 PM

Yeah, I guess I would have to agree with Bryson. Labor is the biggest factor. I work at a CaseIH dealership and our labor rates just went up to $90 bucks an hour. So I'd say auto mechanics are close to that or more.

Sounds about right for all that plus the warranty.

I replaced the motor in my Trans Am. Got a quote from a garage. $3 k for the motor and $2 k labor +/-. I bought the LT1 from NAPA and got a friend with a shop to help. $2200 total including paying him. A lot of garages will make money off the parts as well and you may end up paying more for the motor on top of the labor. I had about the same warranty as well through the remanufacture.

For this particular truck, a 2004 f-150 xlt....is it worth the money to fix it? For that price should I get a lift kit installed? I mean there gonna be under there anyway, right? I'm a total novice to this stuff. I appreciate all the input guys.

Thats a deal.... We just put a Jasper Reman Engine in an 05, which is a 3 year 100k Warranty and the total was $6800 just for the motor and labor.

As for it being worth it: It may cost $7k to repair your truck, but can you buy another F150 with a reman motor and new ball joints for the same cost? You may buy another vehicle and then in six months be in the same situation as you are now.

IMO, that is WAAAAAY too much to invest in a truck that old -
Unless you plan on keeping it for a few more years. Do you?
