Question have an 05 f150 and looking for info on a "all in one ignition key"

Hey guys, I have a 2005 f150 supercab ,4x4,xlt,5.4. I recently purchased the truck and it only came with one ignition key. So I was already planning on getting a spare ignition key off ebay or something ( I am aware that I would need to take it somewhere to get it cut and then take it to a dealer to have it programmed being that I currently only have the 1 key).

But I stumbled accrossed a few threads about guys using ford fusion keys ( key with remote fob built into the head of it) on their f-150's.

However, through all the thread searching I did ...I managed to get more confused rather than get a clearer idea of things. I am not sure which years of fusion keys work with which years of f150s....Im not sure if there is a specific key that has to be got that runs on a certain baseband for communicating ....lots of unknowns for me here lol. So I figured I would post a thread and maybe someone can give me some specific answers about it.

what key do I need to get for my truck that will give me the key/remote combo in one. And also, I do not have remote starts...so a 3 button should be what I need (lock/unlock/panic) any info and links would be helpful. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about the Ford Fusion keys, I've never heard of such a thing. I did hear that the Explorer keys will work, but I haven't personally tried them. When I bought my truck the asshat who sold it to me only had one key. I ended up purchasing another factory key from Ford and having it programmed for $160.

Yeah I had never heard of it either...but after stumbling on some threads tonight.....apparently it is a semi popular thing. I am just not 100% on the specifics when it comes to compatibility.

and yes, I also contacted my dealer and they said it would be about $160 for another key. OR I can buy a factory replacement key on ebay for around $6.00. Then take it to the hardware store and have them cut it for around $1.00. And THEN take it to the dealer and they will program it for around $50.00 so if I get another factory key then im looking at around $60 or so. But if I can get some detailed info on these fusion keys being an option I may opt for one of them instead of a factory 05 f150 key.

Go to homedepo they can make a key and program it off of the key you already have for $65

thanks guys, but im still looking for a more definite answer on what key I need for my truck if I was to get an all in one key. I see there are different model year keys, different FCC ID's for the remote signals, different "bit" frequencies that the keys them self communicate ate. looking for someone that has either done this or knows alot about it that can clearly point me in the right direction on things.

But thank you all for the help so far!.

As for the home depot cut and programming. I am pretty sure that is not available in my area. Most places will only do the cut and you have to go to the dealer for the programming.

I also seen someone else make mention in another thread that their local walmart does cut and programming (which also is not available in my area)....and I also seen a couple comments on the thread I read that in about how big box stores that cut and program keys technically only make "clones" rather than additional master keys. which would mean that if I were to decide I would like to have a 3rd or 4th or 5th etc...etc... key made that I would still have to take it in and have it programmed. versus if I were to have it dealer programmed I would then have to "master keys" and any additional keys I purchase and have cut I can program myself through the self programming mode.

again, im no expert on this and cant say if any of it holds any truth but its what I read in a thread and im just passing the info on.

also from what I gather, the "big box stores" keys have a battery in them that needs changed out every so often that powers the module that communicates with the truck. Where as factory style keys do not.

If you have 2 keys that work, you can program it yourself in about 30 seconds.

If not, you will need help of a lockshop, or someone else.

Are you planning on having 8 keys for the truck? I programmed this key to mine:

with 2 keys I already had, one was original, one was not. Unless you're pushing the 7-8 key mark, I wouldnt worry about cloning keys.

As far as 'master keys' not sure about that either, keys have 40bit transponder codes or 80 bit transponder codes. These trucks use the 80 bit. Once they are programmed, they'll work like any other key.

Fusion/Edge keys, the flip ford keys all work, but you need to check key lengths first, some don't fit around the rubber.

Also, the battery in the key is for keyless entry/panic. The actual transponder chip doesn't have a battery

The battery I was referring to was for the standard ford f150 replacement transponder keys that places like home depot and Walmart offer. With no built in keyless entry, just the transponder key....requires a battery. Look it up. I'll post a link later that I found on their website that states it runs on a lithium ion battery.

Also as I previously mentioned I only have the one key. So I have to at least purchase/cut/ have programmed one key. After which point I will have 2 keys and can self program the max amount of keys if I so desire to on my own.

Hope that clarifies things a bit

Also I had read that the key length difference from a fusion to a f150 can be remedy by having the key cutting operator cut the key from the base rather than the top. Which trims off the excess
