I ran mine with the SCT and used the Gyphon as a gauge cluster for a bit and had no issues. I went all Gryphon when I got my custom tunes from PHP. My truck seems to run a lil bit better with the PHP tunes. I'm keeping my SCT for when I finally get me a Whipple for the truck but it's in a box for now.
I always weigh my mod purchases out to how many dollars spent per hp gained, then decide from there.. I spent about $20 per 1 hp gained, based on 100 rwhp (give or take).. The going rate is around $60 per 1hp gained with a brand new whipple.. Its actually a great bang for the buck either way if you can save your money and skip out on other power mods like CAI's that cost pretty much $300 to 1hp!..
I got my Volant for free, that's why I run it.. No complaints about it either, I may have actually picked up maybe 2hp with it lol! From an efficiency standpoint, it was definitely worth it once I added the tow hook scoop. I picked up nearly 1mpg with it pulling ambient temps at light throttle cruise. So no they are not a complete waste of money when dialed in with a custom tune.

I know this is extremely subjective but are these php towing tunes really that big of a step up from the edge towing tune? I run 89 (i know you can run 87 but with 89 i see enough of an uptick in mileage (almost 1 mpg) that it's worth it for an extra $3 per fill up) with the edge canned towing tune and i'm really happy. I only really wanted to firm up shift points and re-calibrate the speedo due to tire size changes. I love power but i'm more concerned about longevity and reliability. on a side note, I think my new iron cross bumper is restricting the air flow on the trans cooler because i saw some higher temps this weekend towing... what do you guys think about either adding 2 small fans to the stock cooler, getting a bigger cooler, or running an extra cooler laying horizontally with a fan (saw one especial posted last week that would work perfect but kind of pricey)
I'd slice that extra cooler with the fan inline on the return line from the factory cooler. As long as you have some extra fins on a heat exchanger, then it should radiate the heat, with or without the fan. The fan is still a nice touch for when your not moving very much at all.
That troyer cooler is a bit $teep, I'd also look elsewhere.

That's exactly what I will be doing with my edge once I tune with my new SCT.. Just a pricey gauge cluster. I'm glad to see the 2 devices aren't conflicting with each other since this was my only fear. I've previously read a lot of diesel guys use this exact combo with great results, but I haven't heard of any F-150 guys doing it except you.
Are there any tips or tricks you can recommend for running both tuners? I'm all ears.

^^^ Now you know two - I do this as well - with a twist:
OBII port > Scangauge II > Evo ... just for extra gauges
My SCT device loads the tuning then is removed.
SGII has two ports - for passthrough purposes - (you can daisy-chain up to three of them)
No conflicts.
OBDII / Canbus is a CSMA/CD network. But as long as devices are just reading and not writing there are no problems. To flash, disconnect everything except the one active device that's doing the flashing.

did you get the gryphon or the edge? I think the canned tunes on the gryphon are the same or similar to the canned edge tunes and if that's true, the transmission changes are pretty good. I really like level 2 but admittedly, I haven't played with level 3

Great news!
You've probably got 87 in the tank - if so, run the L2 tune. Confirm yer TS & GR - leave everything else alone.
good luck

MGD-
everytime you share information on this forum, i always get that light bulb like it all clicks and makes sense! in your expert opinion what tunes would you go with?
i have 35's
true dual maggies with X pipe
a "not-so-cold air intake" (as cold as the air can get here in AZ)
