Got an offer for the truck

I think most know I listed my truck for sale and I have had a guy who has seemed really interested in it for a couple of weeks now. He just came over and took the truck for a test drive (with me as the passenger of course) and made an offer. He offered $22k for it, which was my absolute lowest price I was willing to go. I told him I would think it over and get back to him. Still wondering if I really want to sell though. Fair offer?

Here's a link to what KBB says private party sale is worth including some of the optional items I was able to add in.

http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/PricingReport.aspx?WebCategoryId=44&YearId=2006&Mi leage=37400&VehicleClass=UsedCar&ManufacturerId=15 &ModelId=99&PriceType=Private+Party&VehicleId=556& SelectionHistory=556|30548|77706|0|0|21560|true|21 645|true|21655|true|21726|true|21738|true|21765|tr ue|21798|true|21810|true&Condition=Good&QuizCondit ions=

What do you guys think?

Ty 05-05-2009 11:40 PM

I would pass on that offer just because of how long you have had it for sale.

ford4wd08 05-05-2009 11:43 PM

^x2 give it more time

boilerup15 05-06-2009 12:00 AM

I guess the question you need to ask yourself is "How bad do I wanna sell it?" If your not sure about selling it yet, then don't settle for your rock bottom price.

dplummer87 05-06-2009 12:05 AM

Agreed, id give it more time or tell him you need at least 25k or something...But if you are really trying to get rid of it then take the offer....

08REDFX 05-06-2009 12:25 AM

also just remember the current economic standings. If you want to sell then sell, just keep in mind though there is the chance you won't get the next offer.....

one other side note.......keep in mind your location, you don't have the advantage of being state side. Shipping to a seller is probably not an option.

Jaslar12002 05-06-2009 12:28 AM

Are you inding me people where buying 08 4x4 new for 25000 you cant beat that deal tell him yes and get you a new one

tallpalehandsome 05-06-2009 12:38 AM

you will miss your lifted truck for sure, but 22k american? **** man...id kill for that
sell it, buy an 08 if you miss it that bad, and throw a lift on it after a while.
start a new toy.

wxmcpo 05-06-2009 01:27 AM

Reason I am thinking about letting her go is I just don't drive her that often anymore. Since I bought my first motorcycle last year the truck just sits and has become my rainy day/going golfing/wearing the dress uniform to work transportation. I have put a little over 1500 miles on the truck in the last 7 months. I can sell the truck and buy the wife something nice, keep her Honda for my rainy day/blah/blah/blah transportation and save $200 or more a month off the current $520 truck payment.

Money certainly isn't the reason I am selling though because the truck payment isn't hurting me, but if I can add another $200 or more a month to my retirement account then that will be better in the end. It is hard to think about letting her go though so I'm still trying to decide.

zitterich246 05-06-2009 01:40 AM

Sell it, and buy some goodies for your bike with the truck payment you'll be saving:thumbsup:

tallpalehandsome 05-06-2009 01:51 AM

ignore the novelties for now...obviously its something you care for, so talk about it with the woman, think about it for a while...make an actual list (by yourself) of pros and cons of selling it.
that should make your decision much easier, or atleast make more sense to you about whats important to you and your woman

Mod (Ret.) 05-06-2009 06:32 AM

You can ask for opinions, but only you can decide if you want to sell it. I'm assuming you do, as you placed the ad, you allowed an interested party to test drive and then make you an honest offer.

These are some tough times for folks. While you do have a very nice truck, with a lot of your sweat and labor invested, the majority of buyers out there do not have much interest in that. It's what we have accepted as the ones that love to work on our vehicles, improve on the looks, and take pride; we do it for the fun and gratitude, but have to accept that it will not nessesarily pay off when it comes time to sell. I've sold many vehicles over the past 25 years in being in this hobby; never made a profit on "my labor" though. My best gratitude is knowing I have a German military vehicle I restored sitting in a Korean museum; sold it a couple of years ago to them. The others, they have come, and gone.

Again, great truck, but if you are serious in selling, I'd jump on that offer if it was indeed your lowest acceptable price. You may not see another, and there are lots of 2004 to 2008 trucks available. Not like yours, but someone can buy a cheaper one, and then add the parts like you did.

In any event, decide quickly what you want to do; it's not fair to those who are buying. This person that made you an offer assumes you want to sell; if you don't want to sell, then be fair and refuse it, then remove the truck from the market.

But make the choice now. Don't delay it any longer and tear your insides out. We cannot make that decision for you.

batman606 05-06-2009 06:46 AM

sell it, your in hawaii for sh!ts sake, awsome truck, no doubt, but obviously you dont need it, sell it, maybe buy my nite for 4000,lol. seriuosly, its a good price, be fair to those wanting to buy, you can allways pick up another truck reasonable and restore.
oh yeah, retirment!, definatley need that!!!!

Fergusmj 05-06-2009 08:50 AM

Ever thought about converting it back to stock and selling all of the aftermarket stuff separate?

I did this with my STI when I sold it. Took some of the aftermarket parts off and sold them separately.

The Boz 05-06-2009 09:15 AM

At one time, I was in the same boat as you. I had a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 decked out, hemi v8, suspension lift, tires, wheels, chrome, etc, a lot like yours. I invested a lot of time, effort and money into it and when my loan was paid for, I bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and drove it, leaving my truck in the garage collecting dust. The Jeep was newer, better features, and got a lot better gas mileage.

After while, I thought why not sell it and invest that money back into other things like my house. So I did and after a couple of months it was great having two new bathrooms, new windows, the wife loved it, but later as summer rolled around each year, I would see modified trucks driving around and remembered how awesome they looked and how I regretted selling mine.

You may not drive it now, but that could change and I would hate to see you sell such a nice looking truck you spent a lot of time working on, getting is just right. I told myself if I ever buy another truck, they only way I would part ways with it is if a natural disaster took it off the face of this earth.

Lenn 05-06-2009 10:15 AM

I concur with Bucko and The Boz. The truck is a material item that you no doubt love and have alot of attachment to. Harsh reality is that it is almost not fair to the truck to just sit and not to be enjoyed after all that time and effort has gone into it. You are a pretty set man by ways of the Navy and your rank. You know that if you miss it that much, there is another F150 being sold somewhere that you will end up pouring your heart and soul into just like this one. As much as you would hate to do it PASS THE TORCH. Like you said, an extra $200/mo is a nice bump.

If you do sell it, I wish it fair winds and following seas.

Mod (Ret.) 05-06-2009 10:42 AM

And if it makes you feel any better, your not alone in making sacrifices. I've been a Harley owner for more than 25 years. Rode motorcycles before they were "cool". I recently decided to sell my 2000 FLHT, because it sat in the garage in Florida while I have to work in Texas (company closed the Florida plant, moved everyone to Atlanta and Dallas). It was here in Dallas for awhile; I paid an extra 60 buck more in rent a month at the apartment complex to store it. Then I realized that because I travel so much, paying the 60 bucks a month was a waste, so I rode it back to Florida and parked it back in the garage there. It now collects dust. It has 134K on it; second engine, but now it just sits. It was time to sell it. I still have it, but it's up for sale.

Bottom line, I'll get another some day; when I can enjoy it again. You will do the same with a truck.

Judging by that ^ post i would have to say sell it. I think 22k is a fair price and you listed some beneficial stuff you can do with all the extra money. And like it was said before. If you do really miss it, you have enough for a solid down payment on a new one.

wxmcpo 05-06-2009 12:02 PM

So I've thought about it (A LOT) and I have decided that I am going to accept the $22k offer for it. I may still try to squeeze $23k, but if $22k is his firm price I'm going to take it. It will definitely be a hard thing for me to watch her drive away in someone else's possession, but I know in the end this is the best option since I no longer drive her. At least he only lives one street over so I'll be able to ensure he's taking good care of her.

Wife and I have been looking and were initially thinking about a Saturn Vue, but not really liking what I am reading about them. We have been checking Craigslist ourselves and there are a couple 2008 Honda Accords in the $12k range we are looking at. I know eventually I will get another truck and it will definitey be an F150, this has been by far the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Hey one positive is I won't have to worry about the sparkplug issue in a couple of years.

The Boz 05-06-2009 12:08 PM

My wife has a 2008 Saturn Vue, AWD, leather, nicely equipped and she loves it. Perfect for what she wanted in a crossover vehicle.

Grrrowler 05-06-2009 03:06 PM

It'll definitely be sad to see it go, but in the end it's just a thing. It won't last forever, and the fun and enjoyment you got out of it can't be taken away.

So, simultaneous congrats and condolences on selling it. :icon_cry:

TFX4 05-06-2009 10:43 PM

Well, congrats on selling the truck! I think you made the right choice

wxmcpo 05-06-2009 11:31 PM

Yeah I just called him and said I'd take $22k for it, which was my absolute lowest I was willing to go for it. He was very happy and thanked me several times. We are off to the bank tomorrow to do a transfer of funds and hopefully the bank can just issue him the title instead of sending it to me and me having to sign it over to him.

Tomorrow is going to be a sad, sad day for me as I possibly watch him drive away in his new to him truck. I will turn him onto this site and maybe it can continue on here.

Change

You have help me on this forum. Things you have learned were shared.
.. BUT..
You know what you want. Trucks can be replaced. Your thinking ahead. I have sold many of great trucks over the years. There is always a cool new toy around the corner.

Too bad your not in San Diego area My cousin is a Sales manager at a Ford and Honda dealer. Although it seems like your looking for a used car.

"checking Craigslist ourselves and there are a couple 2008 Honda Accords in the $12k range"

Good luck
Larry

Grrrowler 05-07-2009 12:28 AM

It's the circle of life..it moves onto someone else and has a new life with him. It doesn't make a lot of financial sense to pay $520/month for something you don't use much, so there is a bright side to the sale. Thanks for keeping us all updated.

The Ford Edge is another vehicle we were looking into.

Larryw1 05-07-2009 12:45 AM

Ford Edge

I love mine!
I just passed 30,000 miles last week. We have driven many a rental. my wife is always happy to get her car back. I took my edge to the Dealer every 5k for free service. (came with car)

I have had some small electicall issues WTY
I messed up a panel mayself - the dealer WTY for me
Just had the battery replace - Acid build up on the + post WTY

this car has been driven hard. It's fun, it's fast

Mine is AWD
the brakes are bigger. than on the FWD
there is no FWD torque with accel.

22mpg on the hwy
my town driving isn't realistic for most. I live up this big hill - kills fuel economy. 16.5 mpg avarage
the hill by itself 9 mpg :-(

I love where I live, so no prob.

wxmcpo 05-08-2009 02:32 AM

Well the truck is officially gone now. New owner took possession of it earlier this evening. It was sad to see it go and I miss her already, but what makes me happy is knowing I don't have to make a $520 truck payment on the 15th.

Wife has been on Craigslist all night looking at new "to her" vehicles she's interested in. We are schedule to go look at an 07 Cadillac CTS fully loaded with only 19k miles on it. It's listed for $14,600.

Mod (Ret.) 05-08-2009 07:35 AM

From a truck, to a cadillac???

The pain, oh the pain.

TFX4 05-08-2009 09:27 AM

If that Cadillac is clean that would be a pretty solid deal with only 19K on it!!

ford4wd08 05-08-2009 11:01 AM

not a caddy!!!!! that just hurts me to even think of sellin a f150 to get a caddy

Lenn 05-08-2009 12:42 PM

I agree about the change but the car is for his wife, not him. NTM- a CTS is a pretty BA car. I like them. I would rock one.

wxmcpo 05-08-2009 01:01 PM

Yeah I'm not a Caddy fan, but after buying me 2 new trucks in the last 6 years and making the wife drive used beaters it's time for me to do something for her. That was part of my motivation in selling the truck, she has let me get all my toys (including the truck I just sold) without even batting an eye so it's time for me to give a little.

I'm actually trying to convince her we should take that extra $520 a month and pay off the motorcycle and buy something this time next year when we'll have absolutely ZERO debt. We'll go look at the Caddy though and hopefully it's too good to be true, maybe a salvaged title or something. :whistling2:

The Boz 05-08-2009 02:15 PM

...still going to miss that Big Black Monster of a truck that was your ex-truck. It was such a beauty. :notworthy:

emtzach 05-08-2009 02:46 PM

i just dont think i could do it. i would sell my truck in a heartbeat but only cuz i havent done the work i want to do. the oly reason i would sell is to get into a truck thats already lifted. im stationed in WA at lewis and dont have anywhere to do the work on my truck and im sure as hell not gonna pay 3800 bucks to have someone else put in a 1200 dollar kit. but good luck on the new car search im sure the wife is very happy i know mine would be

wxmcpo 05-08-2009 04:02 PM

It was tough to come to the decision to sell her, but I know that it was really the right thing to do. I simply did not drive the truck since buying my motorcycle last year. I still had $19k left to pay on it and was paying $520 a month just to have the truck sit outside my house. Now I am $19k less in debt and can either save that money or get something that is a few hundred a month cheaper.

Trust me, I do not believe anyone could love their truck as much as I loved my truck. Everytime I drove my truck it brought a smile to my face because it was exactly what I had always wanted in a truck. I know one day I will be back in a truck, but I think I will buy one that is already lifted rather than sinking all that money back into another one.

This is a great board and I do plan ot stick around and be an active member and offer up my advice whenever I can.

Gosh I would love to have one of those, but I am actually gonna like not having the payment either.

We just got back from looking at a 2005 PT Cruiser convertible that my wife fell in love with. It has 45k miles on it and looks to be in really good condition so it may be the one she goes with. So keeps asking me if I like it and I tell her it doesn't matter if I like it because I'm not the one driving it, although it is a neat little car.

Appreciate that. I loved that truck and it was definitely a tough decision to do. Part of my reasoning for selling was because I wanted to finally give the wife something she wanted since she has allowed me to get my toys. So today we picked this up for her.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...Photos/PT1.jpg

Monthly payment is exactly $300 a month less than the truck and I'm loving that. Although money wasn't a factor in my decision to sell I will not miss the $520 a month payment.

navytrev 05-12-2009 02:48 AM

You got a PT loser! I have read that those cars get horrible reviews. And they have not changed it since it came out and they are no longer going to be producing it

Yep it's what the wife wanted and so I got it for her. Some good reviews, some bad, just about the same for any vehicle on the road today. Not worried about the "they are no longer going to be producing it" because lots of vehicles fit that.

Lenn 05-12-2009 07:18 AM

Well if the plan was to sell it to get something that the wife wanted, well then sounds like you did what you planned on. Congrats on the new purchase (even though that will not look nearly as cool with a bull bar and a 6" lift) and I hope you and your wife enjoy it. You certainly get the perfect weather for it there. Hope to see you staying active around here.

The Boz 05-12-2009 08:08 AM

If the goal was to make the wife happy, then it looks like you accomplished that. Congrats on your wife’s new ride.

I don't know, it might look good with a 6" suspension lift, a nice set of wheels with 35's, nerf bars, etc  haha sadly enough I have seen some of these cars ruined like that.

Grrrowler 05-12-2009 11:41 AM

Congrats on the purchase. It wouldn't be my choice of vehicle, but it's great that your wife got what she wants, and I'm sure she'll enjoy it. The convertible must be great in HI. As for saving $300/month, that's incredible. Sounds like a smart financial move as well.

That was one of my reasons for selling. I was paying $520 a month for the truck and another $220 a month for the bike while the wife was driving a 1996 Honda Accord we bought off a used car lot when we first got here. The air conditioning is going out amongst other issues. So I just figured hey why don't I just sell something that just sits there and get her something nice. I truly hated selling the truck, but making her happy made it a lot easier.

You're right though, it won't look anywhere near as cool as a lifted F150, but then again not many things on the road do.

Yeah it wasn't my first choice either. She keeps asking me if I like it (because she really does). I just tell her it doesn't matter what I think because I got it for you, not me. All that matters is that you like it. Hawaii is definitely a nice place to drive with the top down and I have a feeling we'll be out this weekend.

Another motivating factor in actually selling. I do plan to take that extra $300 though and apply it to either the car, motorcycle or last remaining credit card with any sort of balance on it. Wife and I have a plan to be totally debt free in 18 months. We want to buy a house when we return to the mainland in 18 months and starting debt free will be a great way to do it.

Hope to see you staying active around here.
Oh I plan to stick around, this is a great board with some great folks.

It's good to think about the wife! I try to give my wife some of the things she wants. After all she let me have my truck, without much of a fight. LOL
I have a neighbor who has a PT Cruiser. He has had it for years, with great results. Also two or three friends have them. They all like them. I hope the one you bought the wife is good to you. It looks good.

I can’t count how often I have been told Negative things about the shell on my truck. Or the shiny rims. I like what I have! Your wife likes her new car and that is what counts.

I hope next year I can buy a Can-Am Spyder and then maybe my truck will sit ???

I'm sorry to hear that you don't have your F150 anymore man. I just traded mine in a few days ago and picked up an 2010 Fusion. I know what you mean about the payment. I was paying $600 a month for mine and HATED that payment from the first payment I made but I loved the truck so I kept it. I'm paying $200 less per month for my Fusion and I love it so dang much!!!!

I do plan to get another F series truck in the future because no other truck can compare to the Ford F series!!!
