gearing for performance
I'm building an 05 f150. i will be putting on 33" tires on the stock 17" rims. I'm looking to re-gear for power. Both for towing and occasional drag racing. I've done searches upon searches and the more I look the more varying oppinions tend to be. Will 4.56:1 be too much? I'm not too worried about fuel economy. I know I'm going to be running around 2500rpm at highway.
How will these gears impact quarter mile times. And how will they impact towing.
Is there a better choice?

4.56 brought my truck back to near stock numbers with 35's. It is a bit more torquey off the line, but feels much the same otherwise. That may give you an idea... the 4.10 might be sufficient for the 33's. I'm unsure though if the 4.56 will be too much...
Thanks for the replies. What do you mean when you say too much? Wider tires, sandbags when i need 'em, and RAS should keep the tires planted unless I'm trying to spin.
I heard someone say the truck gets to 60 real quick but acceleration upwards of 90 was a real dog. I feel like I'm confusing myself more and more the more I think about it.
You shouldnt be losing "oomph" at higher speed unless you're past the power curve in top gear. But on these engines I thought they made the most power right around 4500-5000rpm.
Is there something I'm missing?

32/33 x 4.56 = 4.42
So 33" tires with a 4.56 gear ratio would be equivalent to stock tires with a 4.42!
3.73 is a tire burner stock, I couldn't imagine a 4.42!
32/33 x 4.30 = 4.16
So a 4.30 would achieve a little lower than 4.10
With that I might go with the 4.56 because a 4.30(4.10 equivalent) may not be that impressive of a drag gear.
And he'll just for grins lets see what a 4.88 would achieve.
32/33 x 4.88 = 4.73
