Default Gas gauge issue

Hey guys,

I just bought a 2008 F150 FX4 and I'm having a small issue I'm hoping to fix a little cheaper than what Im worried it'll cost.

My gas gauge will only work about 50% of the time. When I start up everything is fine but while im driving the gauge will suddenly goto E and my low fuel warning pops up.

My friends are saying it's probably an issue with the float, that the connection is probably corroded but is there anything else a little cheaper I could try first?

could also be your cluster... common problem with our year group. I would pull the cluster first and see if you can find something loose on the backside..

I second the cluster. That or wiring. I don't think the float would go up and down like that on the same tank of gas.

Quick update, I never took the cluster apart because I plugged in my obd2 adapter and fired up torque on my phone. I monitored the fuel guide from the obd and it seems the float is sending signal just fine. I haven't had any more issues so I'm leaving it for now

There are various rebuild services for your cluster around. They should be able to take care of your faulty gauge for around $100. If you have the odometer backlight problem too it might be a good time to take care of it.
