Fuel Pump Driver Module- Check yours!!
 

Ok, I know this is a fairly well known fact to most but to those that arent aware this is a heads up. Now Ford has built one hell of a truck with the F-150 but we all know they have their quirks and the fuel pump driver module issue is one of them. The part name says it all, it drives your fuel pump so its pretty darn important but in Fords ultimate wisdom they mounted it to the frame cross member above the spare tire under the bed where its protected from damage in theory but its not protected from road grim and salt. Its made of a die cast type material and plastic and since dissimilar materials often like to do the die cast corrodes badly against the steel cross member, especially because its in an area that is difficult to wash and if you live in the rust belt like I do the problem becomes much worse because of the road salt. As you can imagine if this part corrodes enough it just stops working which means your fuel pump doesnt work. Often times the problem is wrongly diagnosed as a bad fuel pump which can be costly to replace when its not the actual issue. I decided to pull my spare down since I wanted to check the pressure in the spare anyways so while I was under there I had a look at the FPDM and this is what I found.

I picked up the Dorman name brand replacement part. I decided on this one after reading up on them, people are still having issues with the Ford part even after replacement.

Both the Dorman and the Ford replacment comes with fasteners that space the module out from the cross member to keep crud from collecting under it.

I put some grease on the threads and some dielectric grease on the plug to keep water out, it didnt seem to be sealed well because it was full of sand. You can see the rubber spacers used to keep the module away from the frame.

This part was hard to find, no one had it in stock and I had to order this one and it took a couple days so save yourself a headache and check yours and replace it if it looks like mine did. Could save your butt from an expensive tow and time without your truck. The Dorman part cost me about $108, less than most tow company's charge to tow you home. Go check yours!

Hey good heads up on that, thanks. Luckily I dont live anywhere near any type of moisture lol. And my truck has been in this area since new. But i think im still going to check mine just in case.

From what I understand about these it that its not necessarily the moisture the makes it corrode its the dis-similar metals. The aluminum housing on the module and the steel member its mounted on cause electrolysis and corrosion. Same reason you need to use plastic hangars to hang copper pipe in houses. So no matter the environment you live i think everyone can have this issue...

Yeah I mentioned that in my post. Youre right, that is a problem everywhere but the corrosion is accelerated by the road salt used in the northern parts of the country.

I think i paid $68 for a Dorman replacement through Amazon. That was the best price I could find.

I always forget about amazon for parts. That's a good price.
