Fuel gauge only reading half?

I just bought a 2006 f150 supercab 4.6l v8. 173k on it. The fuel gauge only reads half but the tank will not take anymore fuel like it is full. Gas gauge does go down over time. No check engine light. I checked the wiring harness under the driver side door on the frame and it was good. Checked the evap solenoid under the hood and it seems to be good.

Any ideas? Truck runs completely fine. I just want an accurate fuel gauge! Thanks everyone!

Truck was probably sitting for a while with only a half tank or less and the float stuck a little from moisture/flash rust. Run some Techron or MMO through the tank a few times and that should take care of it... mine did the same thing when I first bought it (had been sitting for a year a half mile from the ocean with an almost empty tank).

as mentioned above...Chevron Techron (Whole Fuel System Cleaner NOT Fuel Injector Cleaner) is a good product for this...

Ok I'll try that. Thanks!

I had this issue with my '07. I filled up and the needle didn't move. Tool it to the dealer and under warranty, I got the fuel sending unit replaced. Total was just under $500, but again I claimed it under warranty.

My gauge will move, just won't go past half. It goes down fine.

I agree with the sending unit. There are electrical contacts for the float. They wear off.

You should try running clean water over the top of the gas tank. Washing any debris away from the electrical connections on the tank level transmitter can only help.
