Default Front hitch winch mount

Hi all, here I want to document how I made a front winch hitch mount for a stock truck - through the grill!

I found that nobody has posted much information about mounting a winch in the front bumper area of their 04-08 f150, mostly due to the oil cooler and bumper geometry. This is the solution I came up with.
The first step is to relocate the transmission cooler backward towards the radiator. It has several inches of space behind it, so doing so is not difficult.

Initial cooler location

First, the hood latch support needed to be pushed back. Conveniently, there is a forward hole located in it that you can use after pushing the support back. Do not worry, the hood latch is not affected by this ~2-degree angle change. Note that the thin metal support plates sandwiched between the hood latch support & trans cooler supports and the radiator brace need to be flattened slightly to accomodate for the changes. Now the transmission cooler has space to be moved back against the radiator. To do so, I drilled 1/4" holes in the mount legs about 1.5-2" forward. After bending the supports a little bit, I was able to achieve a fairly tight fitment. The lines are flexible enough to accommodate this change.

Final transmission cooler modifications

Now I had some more space to work with behind the grill and bumper. Next, I bought a Draw-Tite 65043 front hitch (off of marketplace), which is made for these trucks, and modified it. I cut the hook loops off the bottom so that they wouldn't interfere with the bumper mount plate, and trimmed off the back of the hitch so that it would clear the transmission cooler, especially during installation.

Next, holes need to be drilled for mounting this. The goal is for it to mount 180 degrees, mirrored from its intended mounting location, using all stock holes in the frame. Using a set of straight lines and a measuring tape, I was able to mirror the hole pattern as necessary. The holes come close to the tubing, but clear just fine. They are supposed to be 0.5", however, I opened them up a little more with a step bit to give my rough measuring some leniency. Once this hitch is pressed between the frame rails, it does not want to come out. The top two holes (left and right) are used for mounting.

New holes drilled!

With these holes, the hitch mounts right up into the frame. Note that you may need to trim the inside of your front hook loops slightly - mine came very close! Also note that I trimmed the washers for the bolts by the square tube in order to fit.
Here are some pictures from the install:

This all took a lot of time and planning to make sure everything would work and line up. Honestly, I was pretty lucky too - I was prepared to trim the plastic bumper. I am quite pleased with the look/how it came out. I am glad I still have the same ground clearance and don't have anything dropping down below. Also, the rubber splash guard still fits below all of this!
I hope this helps someone out, or at the very least, you all found this entertaining.

why not just get the front mount hitch setup that is specifically for 11th gens, no modifications necessary?

I have no idea if there is one. I couldn't find any online. Besides, I like a project. If you have a link, I'd be curious to see.

There's a couple, but I like your idea of thinking outside the box because both of those look like they sit down below the bumper.
I have a 2009-2014 hidden winch plate I got cheap off marketplace I want to put on my 2004, which will also require moving the trans cooler if I ever get around to it. Or I may just mount it without the winch and attach a receiver to the top for a removable winch mount through the hole in the bumper like you did.
