Default Front end noise

Hi, my 05 started making a noise in the front end, if you've ever ridden a quad or bike and shut it down while rolling then the sound of the chain and sprocket is damn near the same sound I'm hearing. It's cold here and the noise stopped after everything warmed up, also if I put it in 4×4. Any ideas? Good place to start? Thank you

Vacuum leak or something making the iwe (hubs) engage when they should be in 2wd mode

X3... Need to check for vacuum leaks in the wheel hubs or the lines from the engine to the solenoid then from the solenoid to the hubs.

Does the noise go away if you engage 4WD?

Yes the noise goes away, but it will also make a loud noise and kick out of 4 wheel if put under any conditions other than regular driving

You may be having an issue with you 4x4 solenoid also then... check pass side firewall. Original solenoid was prone to water intrusion. Updated solenoid will have a shield around it to help keep water out.

This one is also useful, though not from Ford.
