Default Front Differential

Hey

I have search for pics and how to's and all that jazz and have come up empty.

Has anyone changed the front differential fluid? If so was it a b*t*h to get the cover off?

What fluid should i use in there? I have heard of using additives, but also heard that the front doesnt need any as its not a limited slip.

Thanks
Mike

The front is the same as your rear differential, regarding limited slip...they will match each other. Both are, or are not limited slip (mine are, so they got the smelly friction modifier added before topping off). Yes, the front cover is a little harder to get off-stuff in the way. Front fluid is listed as 75W-90 synthetic, but I used the 75W-140 same as the rear. Torque for the front cover bolts is 24 ft lbs, and the filler plug tq is 18 ft lbs.

Wrong! They are not both limited slip in the stock configuration! They will have the same gear ratio, but that is where the similarity ends.

Yep no LS in the front so all you need is fluid. The cover isn't that bad just use a ratchet and it makes quick work of it.

So 3 posts and all different opinions, according the service manual it says 75-90 in the front and 75-140 in the rear but makes no reference to friction modifier.

Anyone know 100%..??

Thanks

To all. I stand corrected. Front is NOT LS. I know very little "100%".

My last F-150 was a '92 and I could only get the rear LS with front LS (ordered new). Anyway, if you check your driver door build sticker for the axle code, "H9" or "B6" means it has a LS rear axle. If so, it will need the friction modifier. The front won't require it...but mine has it.

Sorry for the mix up on my part.

Greg

PS: The Raptor got a LS front in 2012, so future F-150s might be able to get them maybe?

I am going to replace m both diff fluids soon. Everyone above is saying to use 75W-90 Synthetic, but my manual says to use regular 80W-90 axle fluid in the front, is this correct?
Is the only friction modifier available from FORD or are there other brands that make it?
Also does anyone know how many quarts I need to buy for each diff?
Thanks
