If I have two non-factory programmed keys would I still be able to self program one of those key/fob combo units?

Are they pretty easy to program?
I had a similar problem. My solution was to buy the flip/key fobs, buy another key, took the key to a local locksmith and cloned my currently operating key for 25.00. Then I removed the chip from the new key, unscrewed the fob key and switched out the chips.

You need two master factory keys in order to self program any additional keys. There are video's of the procedure on youtube. Otherwise just clone your current key at a locksmith, so much easier.

Did you need to do the whole 40-bit key thing? Or did it not matter?

Yes, you will need a 40bit chip to work on the older PATS system or the truck wont start.

You can either get one off ebay or rip apart one of your current working keys for the chip

The good news is the new key from the dealer works like a charm. The bad news is when the dealer tried to duplicate the problem, the original key I was having the problems with worked too. They tried it several times and it started up every time. So weird!

So now I really want to get that new key and fob combo to safeguard another issue.

Thanks to all who chimed in.

The compatibility chart on the item said it wasn't but this is a ford 40 bit combo. Will it work?

Thanks aircrue.

"Key part won't shaky"

Can I program this if I have 2 transponder keys, but only 1 alarm fob?

You can program as many fobs as you want, the procedure should be in your owners manual, and of course YouTube.
