Question Fob and Key Combo for 04?

My wife drives an '11 Edge that has an integrated key/fob combo that I really like since it's compact and is 1 less thing to carry in my pocket. Mine is an '04 FX4.

I did a little research and found some on eBay and amazon for under $20, but the reviews are mixed. So I'm curious if anyone has had any success that can point me to a link of one you've used.

I currently only have 1 key and 2 fobs, but noticed some of the descriptions say you need 2 of each to program them without having to go to a locksmith or dealer.

I'd prefer the flip key style to maximize compactness, but the standard key style with the integrated fob would suffice.

Amazon Amazon

Thanks in advance!

Tough to tell. I had a flip out key in my 02 that worked just fine. I tried one of these in my 07 and the chip would not program to the truck. You WILL need TWO keys to program yourself or else pay a dealer or locksmith.

I needed a 40bit transponder key chip for my 06 Lincoln Mark LT .. an 80bit chip wont work

I bought one of those flip switchblade type 2 button keys on ebay for $20 however it came with an 80bit transponder chip. I couldnt figure out why it wasnt able to program until I came across a site mentioning that older years like ours required a 40bit chip. I then purchased a 40bit chip on ebay for $3

As mentioned above, you will need 2 original keys aswell

If its an aftermarket ebay key there is a small little square that goes inside the fob. I couldnt see any numbering/indication on it that determines what Bit it is. Thats why I thought id try my luck and bought a 40bit chip from an ebay seller for a few bucks.

Look at your OEM key, there will be a marking stamped on the key:

S keys are Ford old PATS (passive aint-theft system) 40 bit encryption, the newer SA is an 80 bit encrytion

Appreciate all the info.

How come you need two factory keys to do your own coding of additional keys?

If I have two non-factory programmed keys would I still be able to self program one of those key/fob combo units?

Are they pretty easy to program?
