Change all of your plugs not just one. If you change one it will happen again.

Do that and you won't have this problem any more. Also change the fuel pump drive module. Just as a pm thing chances are its going to rust out and die. Read a lot before you do the plug change chances are there o.e plugs. Buy the lisle tool before amazon has the best deal on it and put anti seize on the electrode part of the plug.
What Lisle tool? Have a PN or a link? I have this same problem and am about to change the plugs and wires on my 07 F150 Lariat 4.6L SuperCrew, which I just acquired with 137K on it. I used to be an ASE certified mechanic in the early/mid-90's, so I still got a lot, but these modular Fords were just really coming out. Thanks. Jeff

Only need the lisle tool for the 5.4 as the plugs are prone to break and it's an extraction tool.

I took a look at the tools on Amazon just to see, and I found 9/16 spark plug sockets--is that what my 97 4.6 has? Thanks.

you can also tell you have a bad cat by taking the motor up to operating temp and looking at the cat.. it will be hot and glowing red and smell like rotten eggs.. sulfur smell. A bad cat normally produces a DTC also.

Very true! I actually have close to the
same problem again except it's when I accelerate it will flicker and will sit at 3 grand with no power. Thinking it could be a coil though?

Didn't check yet but I will when I get home. All of my plugs have been changed too about 2 months ago so that should be the problem.
