The Final Repair Guide to 5.4 Cam Phaser Tick/Knock Sound
#501
@05screw: you have a few noises going on there, but IIt sounds just like mine did and mine was phasers. Remember that to fix the phaser noise you need to replace more than the phaserss.

Timing Cover Leak
A little update on my oil leak I've been trying to FIND for almost a year now. I found it.
Apparently, my chains are lose. Which means my tensioners are shot. The drivers side chain has enough slop to rub on the timing cover and eventually rubbed through and made a hole about the size of the end of a pencil eraser. The hole is located in the little nook - if you took the top bolt for your power steering pump and continued to screw it in it would travel about 1/2 inch up until it hits the timing cover. That's where the hole is. In the dark little nook or notch area there. I cleaned it up real well, plugged it with an eraser and roughed it up with a dremel then pulled the eraser and plugged the hole with JB Weld. I figure if it can last me until this spring I'll replace the cam phasers, chains, seals, tensioners, etc,.. then so in the meantime I'm buying all the parts to do it myself.
Hope this helps,

Also is it safe to drive for a couple months until I save to buy all the parts?
Truck seems to run awesome right now

@05screw. I can't tell you if your truck is safe to drive, obviously. Some people seem to go quite a while with the noise, others not so much.
I would add VCT solenoids to your list.
Mine had a noise that was very similar to yours and replacing all the parts suggested in this thread did indeed solve the problem.
That said, I could hear your injectors in the video and that noise isn't going to change as a result of this project. Mine still makes injector noise. That may just be how they are.

And yeah I heard the injector noise, that doesnt bother me so I guess Ill start saving money and getting ready to tear into the truck as soon as I gather all the parts.
Thanks for the info.

Mine has made injector noise from day one (new in 05). The cam phaser noise came on rather suddenly, had a couple misses under acceleration, and a couple months later major misses, cam phaser noise (like yours only worse), poor or no idle. I still drive mine on cool or rainy days, although I will not recommend it, eventually, I'm going to foul up the cats, and probably cause more damage from misfires. The last of my parts will be here by this weekend. If I get the Escort out of the garage I will start my journey. Best of luck with yours!!

I put livernois lockouts into cam phasers that were already noisy just to see if that would solve the problem, but it didn't. There was no change from before. I messed with the cam phasers for a while to see if they were repairable, and I really don't think they are. So, I put the lockouts into new cam phasers and reinstalled the phasers. The truck runs smoother and quieter than any 5.4 f150 I've ever heard. It feels and sounds like a new truck.

Boulder,Denver mechanic needed to do this work
Hi, I have a phaser issue in my 2007. Currently running 20-50 oil and the previous owner had the phasers replaced recently. I tried 15-40 diesel and then i tried 10-40 and neither helped. In fact i am not sure, but now i think it is worse. Prior owner always ran 20-50 and told me if i did not i would hear the noise. i would rather fix the issue. About 61,000 miles so far. I am looking for a local mechanic that understands the content of this thread so I did not have to convince him already. I would appreciate any replies from pros that have done this work as explained here and know what this thread is all about.
I can do a lot of mechanical work, but I do not have any specialty tools for this and I would prefer to just git ur done.
