Its really not that difficult. But there's tight areas you must reach into . And follow this guide to a tee . I did it and I'm 49. Haven't done this kind of engine work in 20 years . And I sit back and gloat I now have a non ticking noisey truck and I saved a lot of money . And very happy with what was done...

Listening to a quiet motor is a. Wonderful thing

I did add one with my mechanical fan I removed it saw no difference except more drag on the electrical system.

You had both fans? I hear an electric fan frees up about 11 horses... underdrive pullies another 15 ... something i was wondering about was possibly putting in different cam shafts while its all open.... but i dont know how much better it would be.. i need to research it more.

Default Follow Up

I finished this up a few weeks ago and haven't had a chance to follow up, so I though I'd add my experience and answer some questions. When I started this project I had researched the problem with the 5.4 cam phaser for years. After reading countless threads and talking to owners and mechanics, I decided that the cam phaser was the flaw in the system. Although after reading this thread, I decided to do the whole job. I've known people who have replaced cam phasers only to find, in frustration, that the tick returned later on. Admittedly, I have also heard of people that do this repair and never have another issue. I decided to follow this thread and use the livernois cam phaser lockouts with their tuner to ensure that the the truck ran smooth and that the noise never returned. I replaced everything that is listed in this thread, except the cam phasers. I thought, incorrectly, that putting the lockouts in noisy phasers would solve the problem. After getting the timing figured out and starting the truck, the noise was slightly less, but the same overall. After speaking with livernois, I realized that once a phaser is making noise, it needs to be replaced. I ordered two from rockauto and installed the cam phaser lockouts into them, then put them back in the truck. The livernois lockouts come with a handheld tuner and a custom tune from livernois for your specific vehicle. I sent them my truck information and they emailed me a custom tune within 2 days (I did this before I started working so I would have it on time). It was easy to upload the tune to the tuner and took about 10 minutes to put it in my truck. I started it up and it runs quieter than I could have ever imagined. I keep thinking it has died at stop lights and in drive-thrus because of how quiet it is. Overall, I am extremely happy with this setup. svares made this job feasible for most of us that would not have tried this otherwise. I, personally, feel that the livernois lockouts are a great addition to this job, it's just insurance that the tick will never come back. Livernois advertises that you may lose 10-20 top end hp by locking the variable cam timing, but I haven't noticed even a slight change in my trucks power. The increased durability of my phasers makes it more than worth it to me. My mpg hasn't changed at all and I haven't thrown any trouble codes since installation.

Default Electric Fans

I forgot to mention that I also did a dual electric fan conversion and would highly recommend it to anyone interested. I felt an immediate and noticeable gain in throttle response, as well as an improvement in gas mileage. I'm not sure what the HP gain is, but you can definitely feel a significant difference when you accelerate off of the line. After several tanks of gas I have increased my mileage by an average of 2.5 miles per gallon. It may not seem huge, but it was well worth it to me, especially since I got more power to boot. I bought two 16 inch bosch e-fans on ebay that were from a 7 series BMW. I used two 12-volt continuous duty solenoids that are made for golf carts because they are strong and reliable. One fan is wired into a temp probe in the radiator and is triggered by an adjustable thermostat. The other fan is triggered by the ac compressor activation. I used a few diodes on the second one so I could add a switch into the truck to turn it on if I wanted it on while the ac was off. This was a backup, in case the first fan went out or wasn't keeping up with the heat. Truthfully, the one triggered by the thermostat is more than enough to keep the truck cool in Dallas Texas traffic in the summer. I have had this set up for three years now with no problems. I have the stock alternator and battery and neither has gone out or been excessively strained - even with both fans running.

I used a pusher fan for the AC at idle. But there was no difference prolly be good in place of the mechanical fan entirely

Im happy to read thru this and see people have taken the advice and fixed their trucks! Seems most of you have taken care of your problems using this guide and your own tweaks to get it done the way you want it.

Very happy to hear
